Video: Shaquille O’Neal – “Size Does Matter” @ Flag Art Foundation

If you recall, we brought you some photos from the opening of “Size Does Matter” show curated by Shaquille O’Neal at the Flag Art Foundation. Now comes the video from PBS where Shaq was interviewed and talks about his three favorite pieces (Ron Mueck’s “Big Man”, Willard Wigan’s “Micro Shaq”, and some mini-elevators) among other things.  He also coined another nickname for himself – “Shaqasso.” Via Curated.

Armory Week ’10: Independent

Along with the Armory Show and the regular satellite fairs (Pulse, Scope, Volta), this year we also attended Independent – a new fair founded by Elizabeth Dee of the non-profit X Initiative and Darren Flook of London’s Hotel gallery. Even among a week packed with so much to see, Independent certainly stood out. For one, unlike the other fairs we attended, with labyrinthine rows and aisles packed with gallery booths, Independent was set up like a museum exhibition, with several floors of open space organically […]

Highlights: Recommended openings for Mar 11 – 13

March came in with a bang last weekend and doesn’t let up as we head in the 2nd weekend of the month. Leading the charge are two gargantuan group shows. First up is the big “5 Year Anniversary Exhibit” from Hi-Fructose in Santa Monica, CA at Copro Gallery and the other is “Lush Life 2” up in Seattle, WA at Roq La Rue Gallery. Two of the longest standing galleries in our movement show their strength with stellar lineups that promise not to be missed. […]

Preview: “Hi Fructose 5th Anniversary Show” @ Copro Gallery

It’s hard to believe it’s already been five years since one of our favorite magazines released their first issue. Just like Jonathan LeVine Gallery last month (covered), Hi-Fructose is celebrating their five year anniversary with a group show with artists that have been featured in their publication since the very beginning. With so many great artists included, there are bound to be some great pieces like the piece above from Mia (interviewed). The show opens on Saturday, March 13th at Copro Gallery. Full list of […]

Streets: D*Face x Oscars

UK street artist D*Face (featured) recently stopped by Los Angeles to install some well-timed “Zombie Oscar Statues” last week. The two seven foot sculptures were installed in two locations – atop Runyon Canyon and in the parking lot of the famous Mel’s Drive-In in Hollywood near where the 82nd annual Academy Awards (Oscars) were being held at the Kodak Theatre. Our friend, Jeremy Kaplan (GM of Subliminal Projects) was along for the ride as D*Face worked his version Hollywood magic. The two installations were explained in detail […]

Openings: Asia Top Gallery Hotel Art Fair (Hong Kong)

With stunning views of the Hong Kong harbor and skyline in the background, the third installment of the Asia Top Gallery Hotel Art Fair (a rather cumbersome name that surprisingly isn’t an acronym) opened last weekend at the Grand Hyatt. After successful exhibitions at the New Otani Hotel, Tokyo (2008), and the Grand Hyatt, Seoul (2009), the organizers naturally moved on to another major metropolitan – Hong Kong. Take a look at all the photos some familiar faces as well as some new talent after […]

Openings: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Tell Me A Story” @ LeBasse Projects

Opening in the project room at LeBasse Projects along with Yoshitaka Amano’s show was an installation from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed). Entitled “Tell Me A Story”, the hanging sculptures were reminiscent of the piece from his solo show last May. If you don’t have time to stop by personally to check it out like Yoskay is doing in the photo above, take a look at some photos after the jump…

Preview: Manifest Equality – Pop Up Show

Some of you may remember our coverage from DC during inauguration week where Shepard Fairey sponsored a pop up show called Manifest Hope. The show was a roaring success drawing together artists from across the nation in their support of the Obama campaign and it’s creation of “Hope.” Now, the show has transitioned to a new theme of equality and it’s next stop is Los Angeles. Manifest Equality enlists another stellar group of artist such as Barry McGee, El Mac, Clare Rojas, Gary Baseman, Tim […]
