Preview: Doktor A – “Freak Machanique” @ Lift Gallery

Doktor A, who is considered by many to be one of the pre-eminent “customizers” out there, is opening his show “Freak Machanique” tonight in Detroit. He has long since shown he that he has many other talents including painting and sculpting. For this exhibition, he is bringing a new body of his signature steam-punk inspired work (paintings, drawings and three-dimensional pieces) to Lift Gallery including this hand painted and remixed Koibito figure from Yoskay Yamamoto (featured) which he renamed “The Odorous Fish Man.” More preview images he sent us […]

Preview: Tim Biskup – “I Hate Everyone But You” @ Barracuda

Perhaps inspired by the recent Astro Boy movie, Tim Biskup has painted the robot hero in his signature multi-faceted style for his show “I Hate Everyone But You” opening tomorrow night at De La Barracuda. Biskup’s first show in LA since 2007 will be somewhat of an retrospective but also include new pieces like the one above and a “Darth Vader” piece seen after the jump. Also making an appearance will be multiple sculptural pieces as well as prints from his friend Matt Goldman (from MFG).

Openings: Yue Minjun – “Smile-isms” @ Arario Gallery (New York)

Last week saw the opening of a new exhibition of work by leading Chinese contemporary artist Yue Minjun. The show, which is presented at the New York location of Arario Gallery, is entitled “Smile-isms” and is comprised of lithographs, several statues and one large-scale painting, all featuring the grinning self-portraits for which Minjun is known. Preview: “Go Get Your Shinebox” @ Brooklynite Gallery

Brooklynite Gallery has a pretty interesting show opening on the 21st of this month entitled “Go Get Your Shinebox.” Artists were asked to create their vision of what a “shoeshine box” was, the simplest way to make a living during the economic downturn and perhaps even take a step further to create “survival boxes.” With such a open ended theme show, you can expect a varied response with boxes of all shapes and sizes. On Halloween night, Tony Shafrazi Gallery hosted the solo exhibition (previewed) of Low Brow icon Robert Williams. Remember when we showed you the initial sculpt for a beautiful new bronze from Joe Sorren. Well, the final sculpt and patina has been revealed for “Mr. Kurabi’s Tales of Lovely-ness and All Things Eaten,” Sorren’s first sculpture release in three years. Measuring 14″ high and mounted on a handmade 360 degree wooden swivel stand, the limited edition (24) piece is available exclusively through Joshua Liner Gallery, the site of Sorren’s show in March. As anticipated, the highly praised “Stages” exhibition made it’s US debut yesterday in a beautiful pop-up space hosted by Deitch Projects in New York’s Soho district. As we mentioned when the show debuted in Paris (covered), “Stages” is a traveling exhibition curated by Nike and Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong Foundation to elevate awarenessÂ of theÂ fight against cancer with some of the art world’s most influential artists. Openings: Brendan Monroe @ Richard Heller Gallery

Brendan Monroe (interviewed) premiered a new body of work at Richard Heller Gallery over the weekend. In addition to some fantastic organic and biologically inspired paintings, he also delighted show attendees with several impressive installations.
