Openings: Daniel Arsham – “Fictional Archeology” @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

Last week in Hong Kong, Daniel Arsham opened a new solo show entitled Fictional Archeology at Galerie Perrotin. Included were eroded sculptures featuring the human form inspired by the mummified remains from the volcanic eruption in Pompeii in 79 A.D, a contemporary look at how we may appear in the event of a similar disaster to future archeologists. Rounding out the show was a smaller version the installation seen last year in Miami (covered), a “future archaeological dig site” of modern day items like shoes, cameras, musical instruments, and phones made from chalk. Releases: Mark Jenkins – “Baby” Limited Editions

In association with the new solo from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) that just opened at the Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles (covered), the artist has released some limited editions through Freeway Editions. The Baby tape sculptures come in four different colors and are produced in a run of 10 each and is something every fan of the American street artist recognizes as the medium that is his original claim to fame. Art Focus: Troy Coulterman

The colorful sculptures of Troy Coulterman recently caught our eye, mostly humans entwined with abstract and geometric forms that drip or extrude from each figure. He currently has a show at Arch Enemy Arts, a series of works collectively entitled Full Disclosure and on view in Philadelphia through September 27th. Openings: Mark Jenkins – “Still Life” @ Fabien Castanier Gallery

Over the weekend, a solo from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) opened at the Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles entitled Still Life. Aptly named, the exhibition featured mostly the American artist’s satirical and clever use of human forms as his form of art. Mirroring his street works, viewers can often time be taken unawares when thinking that his installations are actual people. Showing: KAWS – “Clean Slate” @ LA NAVE (Ibiza)

Currently in Ibiza, some works from KAWS are on display at LA NAVE, a new 8,000 sq. ft. exhibition space on the island launched by New York-based gallerist and art collector Lio Malca. Anchored by the seven-metre-tall Clean Slate companion sculpture, the exhibition also includes some originals and prints on display in the transformed old salt warehouse overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Haroshi For HUF (Los Angeles)

A couple weeks back, we finally had time to stop by HUF on Fairfax in Los Angeles to check out Haroshi’s larger than life middle finger. The irreverent sculpt is something the Japanese artist know for his pieces created from compressed used skateboards, but this time also there are limited edition vinyl versions of the middle finger for sale as well. Openings: Cleon Peterson – “Poison” @ Library Street Collective

Over the weekend, the Library Street Collective hosted the opening for a new show from Cleon Peterson in Detroit. Poison features new paintings featuring nightmarish scenes of violence and gore, nothing new to fans of the former assistant to Shepard Fairey. What is new though are the sculptural editions that Peterson has included in the new body of work, a natural next step to bringing his provocative imagery to life. Photo credit: Sal Rodriguez. Canadian graffiti artist Kwest, who we last saw collaborate with on mural with El Mac last year, was able to recently complete a project of his own.
