Showing: Barry McGee @ Workshop Arte Contemporanea (Venice)

Slipping quietly under the radar in the wake of his impressive exhibition in London back in July, Barry McGee unveiled another new body of work just a short distance away from the UK this past weekend. Perhaps making up for lost time abroad, Workshop Arte Contemporanea this time plays host in Venice, Italy, where a wide range of Barry’s signature “clusters” are on display. Constructed of acrylic-painted panels and incorporating geometric patterns, typography, portraiture, the odd household cleaner (ie. Clorox), as well as some composed […]

Just last week, we passed on some photos to our readers of street murals that INSA sent us of work he did while in Hong Kong in conjunction with his show at Above Second (covered). If you remember, on several of these walls he actually collaborated with local graffiti artist Xeme who has become know for his Chinese calligraphic style influenced by the late Hong Kong OG graffiti legend, Tsang Tsou Choi, the so-called King of Kowloon. Well, just this last weekend, Xeme actually closed a […]

Exhibiting in his home city, the painter famous for his smiling self-portraits has included Christian iconography in this latest set of canvases as well as recent work leading the viewer to think about the role of Western influence in China. Is the ubiquitous grin pervading these works laughing at or laughing with the religious symbolism or is it just the Minjun’s signature imagery innocently translated […]

Openings: Barry McGee @ Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London

AM has been keeping a watchful eye on Continental European shows featuring works by Barry McGee. Whenever the cashflow gods have been on our side, we’ve booked the necessary flights or trains to attend as well. This was the case with the 2010 joint show with Danish artist HuskMitNavn at A.L.I.C.E. Gallery in Brussels, and the 2009 three-man show (which also included Ed Templeton and Raymond Pettibon) curated by Aaron Rose at Berlin’s Circleculture Gallery. However, the last time McGee exhibited in the UK was […]

Today in Modena, Italy, Gallerie Civica is hosting the opening of KINDERGARTEN, a group show featuring the talents of Tom Sachs, Futura, Mode 2, Os Gemeos, Kostas Seremetis and Delta. It looks like each of the artists have taken time to bring some sculptural works and installations to the space, leading to a dramatic setting – one that should be enjoyable for “children” of all ages. More photos after the jump…

Showing: James Cauty – “A Riot in a Jam Jar” @ L-13

We’ve mentioned James Cauty’s work briefly in our weekly Overtime articles as well as on our facebook fanpage, but now that we have heard of an actual exhibition of his A Riot in a Jam Jar series, we thought we would feature it more in-depth. Running currently until July 5th at the L-13 Light Industrial Workshop, the sculptural dioramas feature Cauty’s take on a heavy-handed police state utilizing a increasingly complex composition. Make sure you hit up the show catalog site for more titles, descriptions, […]

The show runs through August, so stop by if you happen to be in Marrakech. Otherwise, take a look at some pics Kinsey sent us after the jump…
