Ai Yamaguchi – “kumogakure” @ Aki Gallery (Taiwan)

Closing just last weekend, the Aki Gallery in Taiwan hosted Ai Yamaguchi’s new body of work entitled kumagakure or hidden in clouds. The title is taken from a chapter of The Tale of Genji from Japanese literature and along with inspiration from the beauty of Taiwanese nature, Yamaguchi has woven together an exhibition that features a continuation of her custom shaped paintings, a large-scale piece, various art-related products, and a special walk-in art structure. Besides a piece here or there for various art fairs, we don’t […]

Showing: “Street Art – Meanwhile in deepest East Anglia, thunderbirds were go . . . .” @ Von Der Heydt Museum (Germany)

Currently showing at the Von Der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal, Germany is an exhibition with a rather cumbersome title – Street Art – Meanwhile in deepest East Anglia, thunderbirds were go . . . . Not sure who came up with the name, but included are a great group of street artists – Ash, Herbert Baglione, Boxi, Brad Downey, Ben Eine, Faith47, Boris Hoppek, Mark Jenkins, JR, Os Gêmeos, Mirko Reisser (DAIM), Swoon, and Zezão. Take a look at more pics sent to us from […]

James Marshall (aka Dalek) @ Birmingham Visual Arts Gallery (UAB)

After ten straight days of painting, albeit with the help of some university art students, Dalek (interviewed) has completed a massive four panel, site-specific installation within the Birmingham Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Alabama. With minimalism more reminiscent of his Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz (Part 1 & Part 2) exhibitions over the winter than some of his more traditional work, the street artist turn gallery veteran utilized simple geometric forms and subtle shades of blue to strong effect. On display through August […]

Richard Prince @ Gagosian Gallery (Hong Kong)

Last week at their Central Hong Kong space, Gagosian Gallery opened an exhibition of work from New York-based contemporary artist Richard Prince. Timed perfectly to coincide with Art HK ’11, the exhibition marked the first solo effort in Asia for the famed photographer, painter, and mixed media artist. In a similar fashion to that of his recent Paris exhibition, this body of work presented a wide range of Prince’s repertoire, focusing on his various Untitled photographs series, as well as his Nurse overpaintings and his […]

JR – “Photo Booth” @ Centre Pompidou (Paris)

Furthering along his INSIDEOUT initiative, a global art project that encourages people to utilize the artist’s signature methodology – printed black and white poster pasted outdoors – to portray their local heroes as dramatically represented in NYC recently, JR has created an interactive installation within the historic George Pompidou Museum in Paris that is now open to the public. Anchored by a printing facility plastered with series of new murals from the famed “photograffeur”, Photo Booth brings all the tools necessary for the average person […]

David LaChapelle – “From Darkness to Light” @ Lever House (New York)

Fresh off last week’s opening of his Hong Kong solo exhibition, Raft (covered), David La Chapelle is set to unveil an even more unorthodox body of work of installation-based work. Opening at Lever House Art Collection tomorrow, June 2nd, From Darkness to Light will utilize photography in three distinct ways – collage, stickers, and paper chain. Set a little closer to home in New York City, the native photographic icon this this time draws inspiration from “the simplicity of childhood endeavors taught in early art […]

Openings: Keith Haring @ Gladstone Gallery

Currently showing at Gladstone Gallery until July 1st, the late Keith Haring’s first exhibition with the NY showspace features never before seen works on paper. Interestingly enough, three of the large scale pieces included were created in conjunction with a series of Bill T. Jones performances held in 1982 at The Kitchen, which were executed in real time during Jones’ dances with the sound of the brushstrokes serving as the only thing the audience heard. Rounding out the exhibition are a selection of Haring’s early […]

Showing: “Memories of King Kowloon” @ ArtisTree (Hong Kong)

We touched on the life and “career” of the late Tsang Tsaou Choi, or the self-styled “King of Kowloon” back in 2009 when his work achieved a nice hammer price at auction. For those still lingering in Hong Kong after the close of Art HK, perhaps now is a good time to revisit his work seeing that there is a show at the ArtisTree venue located in HK. Entitled Memories of King Kowloon, the exhibition features original work from the OG “street artist” who spent […]

Showing: Glenn Brown @ Galerie Max Hetzler

Those currently in Berlin would be well advised to make it over to Galerie Max Hetzler as they are set to close on a fantastic new body of work from Glenn Brown.  The Turner Prize nominated English artist, known for reinterpreting others works with his bold color choices and swirling brushwork, also has some of his “painted sculptures” on display at the show (part of Gallery Weekend Berlin) While staring at each painting, one can’t help but find your attention is drawn to each individual […]

Showing: Katrin Fridriks – “Leak of Information” @ Circleculture Gallery (Berlin)

Last month, Circleculture Gallery served as ground zero for Katrin Fridriks newest body of work. Entitled Leak of Information (previewed), the Icelandic-born, Paris-based artist unleashed her abstract mania on Berlin in striking fashion. An impressive series of monochromatic works supplemented her more conventional color rich pieces, which first made waves on the scene a London group show, The Future Tense (covered), last year. Set upon appropriately colored black and white painted walls, the unbridled energy of Fridrick’s work, a Jackson Pollock-like amalgam of motion and […]
