Last Friday at Rotofugi, Daniel Danger (interviewed) opened his latest solo show, There is a Wanderlust Growing in Your Bones, which put on display a selection of prints and originals. With custom paper lanterns infused with the New England artist’s imagery, the mood was certainly set in real life for a collection of works that features his signature explorations of mood and lighting. AM recently attended the opening of Revolutions: Album Cover Art Of Shepard Fairey at Asbury Park. The pop-up exhibition by Shepard Fairey (featured) presented by Jonathan Levine Gallery coincided with the All Tomorrow’s Parties (ATP) music festival and featured a body of work similar to what showed at Robert Berman in Los Angeles earlier this year. On display through November 30th at Peter Fetterman Gallery is an exhibition of works, entitled Iconic Photographs, from Steve McCurry, which chronicle the famous American photojournaist’s most important images. Of course, taking center stage is Afghan Girl, his most powerful and widely recognized photograph which was prominently featured on a 1985 cover of National Geographic depicting a young, then unidentified refugee in Pakistan escaping the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Last Saturday evening, Spoke Art hosted Washington DC-based artist Sam Wolf Connelly’s first solo exhibition. The show is entitled Semiprecious, with the works having the narrative of being left behind because of flaws, for something more special and perfect. The significance of the gems in his work represents someone trying to steal back what they’ve lost, but ending up digging themselves in a hole that they cannot get out of (like ending up in a mineshaft and being stuck with nothing but gems and soot). A while back, AM attended the opening of the group show Flash curated by Anonymous Gallery. Hosted at Wooster Street Social Club, the exhibition had many notables including as Anthony Lister, Curtis Kulig, Dan Witz, Eric White, Greg Lamarche, Kenji Hirata, Kenzo Minami, James Jean, Logan Hicks, Nick Walker, Ron English, Shelter Serra and Tristan Eaton. With new exhibitions rolling in this weekend at Copro Gallery, we thought we would share some last minute photos we took of the Blab! show that has been running for the last month. The seventh annual show which was also a preview of artwork for the upcoming volumes of BLABWORLD No. 2 and 3, featured artwork from artists like Jana Brike, Gary Baseman, Joe Sorren, SHAG, Chet Zar, Sas Christian, and more. Last Saturday evening, Gallery Hijinks hosted San Francisco-based artist Pakayla Biehn’s solo show, (t)here. With this exhibition, she further pushes her technique of using oil on canvas to create her double-exposure photo realistic images, that really started to take stride for her Thinkspace exhibition earlier in the year (covered). A couple weeks ago, the Carmichael Gallery hosted an exhibition from influential photographers and Angelenos Eriberto and Estevan Oriol. The retrospective featured select images from the father and son duo and documented their well-known love affair with LA Latino street life, street art, and graffiti with decades of work under their belt. Entitled Like Father, Like Son, the exhibition consisted of 25 limited edition prints from each photographer, including black and white, color, silver gelatin and digital c-prints. Openings: “Abstractions” @ Opera Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Abstractions at New York’s Opera Gallery. The special group show housed two separate groups of artists. The first was a retrospective from the old school abstract movement from the 1940 to present day. Original works from artists such as Miro, Francis, Soulages, Hartung, Fontana, Arman and Matta were on display. This contrasted with the second group of names from today’s artistic movement like Rostarr, Bast, Ron English, Saber and more who have evolved in their own form of abstraction. […]

A couple nights ago, the Minotaur event put on by Lazarides kicked off at the The Old Vic Tunnels, also the site of 2010′s Hell’s Half Acre exhibition. This time around, the theme was an old Greek legend and depending on your choice for price of admission, dining was included from top Michelin-starred chefs.
