Openings: Aaron Young – “Built Tough” @ Bortolami Gallery

AM recently caught Aaron Young’s New York Solo Built Tough at Bortolami Gallery. The show was a departure from the motorcycle etchings we typically see by Young as he tackled the motif of America and its symbols with new body of works that included sculptures, paintings, and silkscreens. Check it all out after the jump.

Openings: Shawn Barber – “Youth of Today” @ Fecal Face Dot Gallery

After moving away from San Francisco to Los Angeles two years ago to concentrate on painting and opening Memoir Tattoo with his girlfriend, Shawn Barber (interviewed) decided to revisit his previous home city with a new exhibition, Youth of Today at Fecal Face Dot Gallery. The show consists of oil paintings from his Doll Series, which is a commentary on people being consumed by popular culture and having a thirst for celebrity, which had become more apparent to him while living in Southern California. Check […]

Last Thursday night, Party Animals invaded the art space of Royal/T in Culver City. Curated by electronic media artist Lindsay Scoggins of artwork taken from owner Susan Hancock’s extensive collection, the list of artists was impressive including Jeff Koons, Yoshitomo Nara, KAWS, FriendsWithYou, Aya Takano and more. Openings: “Crazy 4 Cult 5” @ Gallery 1988 (Melrose)

Last night on Melrose, Gallery 1988 put one on for the fanboys and film buffs out there with their fifth annual Crazy 4 Cult show. References to favorite cult movies like the boys from Ghostbusters abounded – some subtle, some not. But all in all, the large crowd in attendance left satisfied for one night until the next get together, one must assume judging from the group, at Comic-Con later this month. More opening photos from the Birdman after the jump…

Openings: Nathan Ota & Risk – “That Was Then, This Is Now” @ 111 Minna

Thursday evening, 111 Minna in San Francisco hosted the opening for Nathan Ota and Risk’s collaborative exhibition, That Was Then, This Is Now. The two respected graffiti artists first collaborated over 25 years in high school, but had lost contact ever since. It was not until last year, when Greg Simkins and Jeff Soto worked on murals with Risk (and knew about the two’s previous history), that it was suggested that they reconnect again. This lead to a collaborative mural at Hurley Space last October […]

Openings: Brett Amory – “Dark Light” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Brett Amory’s (interviewed) latest NY solo Dark Light (previewed) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This new series of paintings is a departure from Brett’s daytime series as the subjects are based in the still of night. However, Brett transitions his subjects and urban environments effortlessly into the emptiness of nocturnal darkness. We felt the lost and lonely feelings which we usually experienced in Brett’s works, but with the sun taken away, it felt even a little eerie as desolation wrapped around his signature […]

Openings: Jeremy Fish – “Listen and Learn” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

A couple weeks ago, AM caught the opening of Jeremy Fish’s (featured) exhibition at the Joshua Liner Gallery. The show Listen and Learn showcased not only the bold and complex characters that make up Jeremy’s cartoon-like style, but also the stories of multiple angles told from the viewpoints of different people from all walks of life. With the Snoop Dogg collaboration video we teased you with for comparison, you can see the diversity of focus as the other subjects included skateboarders, strippers, athletes, and more. Each person not […]

Showing: Takashi Murakami – “A History of Editions” @ Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris)

Takashi Murakami fans are in for a real treat as Emmanuel Perrotin is currently holding a retrospective of the limited edition prints created by the founder of the Superflat movement. The space has on display 160 prints created between 2001 to 2011. We drooled over some of Murakami’s rarest prints to date including coveted gems such as 727’s, Tan Tan Bo, Homage to Francis Bacon, Golden DOB just to name a select few. His newer tondo flower and Davy Jones’ Tear abstracts were also on view. This show […]

Openings: Barry McGee @ Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London

AM has been keeping a watchful eye on Continental European shows featuring works by Barry McGee. Whenever the cashflow gods have been on our side, we’ve booked the necessary flights or trains to attend as well. This was the case with the 2010 joint show with Danish artist HuskMitNavn at A.L.I.C.E. Gallery in Brussels, and the 2009 three-man show (which also included Ed Templeton and Raymond Pettibon) curated by Aaron Rose at Berlin’s Circleculture Gallery. However, the last time McGee exhibited in the UK was […]

Openings: Liu Bolin @ Eli Klein Fine Art (NY)

Last week, AM attended the much anticipated opening of Chinese artist Liu Bolin’s. For his first solo in New York, Liu took the city by the horns as he made the most of the past few weeks with his signature self paint & photography sessions by continuing his iconic Hiding In The City series at some of the Big Apple’s most unique locations such as the 9/11 tribute and Bowery & Houston Mural. The special opening at Eli Klein Fine Art was packed from the beginning as fans […]
