Openings: “Lead Poisoning” & Jason D’Aquino Solo @ Last Rites Gallery

Earlier this month, Last Rites Gallery in New York hosted “Lead Poisoning”, a group show that included a surprisingly strong list of participants. Artists like David Stoupakis, Eric White (interviewed), Glenn Barr, Ron English (featured), Chet Zar, Esao Andrews (interviewed), Chris Mars, Greg Simkins (interviewed), Robert Williams, Brian Despain (interviewed) and many others contributed drawings to exhibition. Add in a solo show from Jason D’Aquino, who seems to work exclusively in graphite, and the evening was complete. Take a look at all the openings pics […]

Openings: Melissa Haslam – “Botanica” @ LeBasse Projects

“Botanica,” Melissa Haslam’s (featured) newest solo show, recently opened at LeBasse Projects in Culver City. These new paintings represent the first full body of work since the Melbourne-based artist changed up her style a little with works featuring more portraiture and detail. The new direction clearly shows as the pieces are more focused and and the increased detail has led to having some of her paintings being mistaken for digital work. Of course, Melissa continues to infuse her love for nature in her work, as […]

Openings: Jeremy Fish – “The Road Less Traveled Tour” @ Upper Playground PDX

Jeremy Fish (featured) “The Road Less Traveled Tour,” which started in Denver, has reached it’s last stop at Fifty24PDX, Upper Playground Portland branch. As usual, the Fish mobile, Jeremy’s infamous van, was on site, bringing with it paintings, prints, books, and of course the man of the hour. Take a look at all the opening photos after the jump, sent to us by our friend Andrew Wong.

Openings: “As They See It” @ 941 Geary

Another group show recently opened at the recently opened 941 Geary Gallery in San Francisco featuring some of the young talent, as well as some more established artists. Openings: Victor Reyes – “Misspelled” @ Robert Berman Gallery/E6

Letters – we’ve learned about them before we even enter kindergarten, practice writing them in school for years, and use them countless times everyday to communicate. They are vital to our lives, yet how many of us really take the time to examine, dissect, and improve upon their appearance? Even the most normally basic of forms want to be prettied up, admired, and told that they were beautiful and enriched your lives; show you things you’ve never considered before. Victor Reyes is acutely aware of […]

Openings: Transfer (Brazil)

Last weekend, the traveling museum exhibition “TRANSFER” opened it’s doors at the new Brazilian Cultural Pavilion. In 2008, the first edition of the event was held at Santander Cultural in Porto Alegre, Brazil’s largest city in its southern region. This year, the show featuring “contemporary visual art, street art, skateboarding, independent music, as well as underground comics and fanzine art from the last two decades” is set in the cradle of Brazilian street art, Sao Paulo, hoping to duplicate or exceed the 80,000 visitors that […]

Openings: David LaChapelle – “American Jesus” @ Paul Kasmin

Last Tuesday night, Paul Kasmin Gallery hosted the opening for David La Chapelle’s latest body of work “American Jesus.” We’re not sure if it’s the gallery or David’s following, but the space was jam-packed with onlookers gawking at David’s elaborate digitally rendered photos. Fans dressed up as if it was Halloween, mingling away, waiting to catch some time with the star artist, and much like last month’s crazy Mark Ryden opening, the action spilled into the adjacent streets. The provocative phototography grabbed everyone attention as […]

Openings: “Viva La Revolucion” @ Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

Saturday evening in San Diego was a great night for street, urban, and new contemporary art. With many of the museums in so-called cultural centers of this country and world still slow to embrace a rapidly growing movement, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego made it clear where they stand with an amazing exhibition of some of the major players in this art “Revolucion”. Not only did the city open up their public spaces to the artists (albeit still with some naysayers), they also […]

Openings: Survey Select

Last Thursday night, San Diego got a rare dose of great art courtesy of Mark Murphy. The long time collector, curator, publisher, and friend to artists put together another impressive group show, this time entitled “Survey Select”, held at the Wonder Bread Factory. The well attended event kicked off a great July for Los Angeles’ southern neighbor with Viva La Revolucion and SDCC 2010 still coming up. More pics after the jump…
