AM went along to the opening of Emma Tooth’s exhibition “Extraordinary paintings of Ordinary People” this weekend at Derby Museum and Art Gallery. Lavishly dressed for the occasion in one her own creations, Ms. Tooth’s paintings were spread across two rooms of the Museum, and as we mentioned last week, both mixed in with the permanent collection of 18th Century artist Joseph Wright, and also in her own exhibition space with Wright’s paintings interspersed between Emma’s work. Our friends over at Above Second have sent over some images of Meggs working on some pieces for the opening of his show on July 9th (6pm – late). After recently opening a similarly named show “King for a Day” at his own gallery down under, the Melbourne based artist has traveled all the way to Hong Kong to showcase a new body of work. “Shred,” an exhibition curated by New York downtown art critic and Paper magazine editor Carlo McCormick, opened last Thursday night at Chelsea’s Perry Rubenstein Gallery. As the name implies, the show features collage-based art from a diverse group of artists, including Dash Snow, Elbow-Toe (interviewed), FAILE (featured), Shepard Fairey (featured), Mark Flood, Erik Foss, Swoon (interviewed) and Judith Supine. Ever the gentleman, Michael De Feo brought a whole bunch of flowers as a gift to the attendees at his solo show in Hong Kong last week including some live painting. “Mining for Splinters and Diamonds” (previewed) brought a selection of abstract and figurative mixed media pieces to No Borders Art, and AM was there to check out the work. Lucy McLauchlan’s latest solo show “Together…” is currently gracing the walls of the Rathbone Place gallery of Lazarides, and last week AM went along to the opening night to see the new body of work. Melbourne street artist Meggs, part of the Everfresh collective, opened his show “King for a Day” at the Backwoods Gallery last week. As part owner of the fresh new gallery, it seemed appropriate that the inaugural show would involve one of it’s founders. AM recently took a visit into Bedstuy’s Brooklynite Gallery to hang out and see their latest show “Surface Tension”. The exhibition comprised of works from two artists whose works seemingly take different directions. David Walker’s brighter palates and literal/photo-realistic portraits are created without a single brushstroke; in fact, only spray paint is used. The faces seemed to come together between the metallic and bright hues. On the other side of the coin we also enjoyed Guy Denning’s darker and deeper figurative painting. Last weekend, Brandi Milne opened up her new show, “My Heart Shall Not Fear”, in the heart of the Culver City Art District. Last Saturday night, Dave Cooper opened his solo alongside Jeff Soto in NY at Jonathan LeVine’s Gallery in Chelsea. As usual, Cooper produced a fascinating body of work that would interest any BBW lover with lush and strangely compelling paintings of billowy and fleshy women frolicking in and out of disturbing scenarios. The subjects appear to be contortionists as well to the highest degree, populating a vast world filled with vaguely sensual and uncomfortable scenarios.
