Openings: Chris Berens & Patrick Kelly – “Nethermoor” & “Elusive Object” @ Roq La Rue

It has been four years since Chris Berens last showed solo at Roq La Rue.  Nethermoor, as the show is titled, is based on Michael Ende’s book, Die Unendliche Geschichte, or as many may know it, The Neverending Story.  The show opening however, wove a story all its own. Bad weather on the East coast and shipping issues caused havoc with the large exhibition, resulting in an open without the art. While Chris and his wife traveled from Amsterdam to be in attendance, the art […]

Openings: Robert Williams – “Slang Aesthetics!” @ LA Municipal Art Gallery

Saturday night marked the triumphant return of Robert Williams to the Los Angeles art scene with his first comprehensive showing in many years. Slang Aesthetics! at the LA Municipal Art Gallery featured paintings, drawings, and sculptural works from the influential painter and and one of the co-founders of Juxtapoz Magazine, and was a testament to the locally-based artist’s talent and the significance of his career. The prime selection of new and recent work must be viewed in person to be appreciated and we will certainly be back multiple time before it […]

Openings: Haroshi – “Still Pushing Despite The Odds” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

On February 19th, Jonathan LeVine Gallery opened Still Pushing Despite The Odds, a new solo by Haroshi (featured) at their location on West 23rd Street. Consisting of mostly large scale works, this is his third show with the showspace in Chelsea, and is a great demonstration of his unique skills and inventiveness. The Tokyo-based artist’s signature technique of creating incredible sculptural works using old skateboards has evolved so much from his initial concepts with this new body of work being great example of his current concepts. By compressing the boards in different […]

Viewpoints / Openings: Dran — ‘Public Execution’ pop-up show in Soho, London

It’s been some time since Pictures On Walls has organised an art exhibition. The previous one was in December 2013 with the Shok-1 solo show, X-Rainbow. Last year, POW gave up its premises on Commercial Street in East London. With a permanent show space no longer retained, the number of print releases in 2014 restricted to a small handful (by Paul Insect, Maya Hayuk and Invader), and plenty of competitors arriving on the street art scene eager to fill the void, many wondered what the […]

Openings: Optimist – ‘Packrat’s Paradise’ @ LeQuiVive

LeQuiVive has been hosting some exciting exhibitions over recent months. Currently showing is Packrat’s Paradise by Optimist aka Tim the Optimist. The exhibition is as much an autobiography as it is an art show, with a large scale installation consisting of a variety of paintings on different mediums intertwined with ephemera and memorabilia of his life and the graffiti crew culture he has been immersed within for the last decade. The exhibition is seemingly well titled by the look of the sheer amount of ‘stuff’ crammed into […]

Setup: GILF! – “Shattering” @ Joseph Gross Gallery

Last Thursday, Brooklyn-based conceptual and activist artist Ann Lewis also known as GILF! hosted an unusual event in DUMBO entitled Shattering. She invited guests into a private space in the gallery and gave them the opportunity to individually shatter glasses and dishes that she provided. She will be using the ceramic remnants to create artwork for an upcoming show at Joseph Gross Gallery in Chelsea this spring. The piece will become part of a public works project that will benefit neighborhoods such as Brownsville and East New York. When […]

POW! WOW! ’15 / Openings: RVCA #ThePod @ Modern Honolulu

On February 13th, the day before the official closing of POW! WOW! Hawaii 2015 (more coverage here), one of the main partners of the event, RVCA, organized an interesting show at Modern Honolulu, curated by PM Tenore. The visitors had a chance to see the collection of surfboards that surfing superstar Kelly Slater and RVCA artist Kevin Ancell collaborated on. This idea initially came into focus after watching the movie Blackfish and seeing the wild captures, captive breeding and sad life of majestic Orcas in marine mammal parks. The whole experience inspired Slater […]

Openings: 1010 – “Limbus” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Last weekend, art fans in San Francisco saw the opening of Limbus at Hashimoto Contemporary, the debut solo in the United States for German artist 1010. The multi-colored pieces were indoor representations of the work he does on the streets – three dimensional sensory illusions that make it appear there are holes in the side of buildings and structures – a good example of which he painted as an installation on one of the gallery walls.
