Openings: Israel Lund – “Israel Lund” @ David Lewis Gallery

AM recently attended the much anticipated opening for Israel Lund at Lower East Side’s David Lewis Gallery. The eponymously named solo includes both his signature silkscreened canvas paintings along with a new series of sculptures which center around one of his core tools – the silkscreen. As the title suggests, this is Israel Lund presenting his take on Israel Lund, but unlike self-titled shows that we’ve experienced in the past, this exhibition seems to be the artist conducting an impression of himself. From his enlarged silkscreens […]

Recap: Futura x Crooks & Castles – “LEWDS” Launch @ Known Gallery

Last week, the Known Gallery featured the release party (with support from Hennessy) for a new line from Crooks & Castles designed by Futura. Entitled LEWDS, the collection (which can be seen in more detail here) featured the familiar text and atom motif from the NYC graffiti legend while paying homage to Christopher “Lewds” Natalio, the late Marketing Director of the streetwear brand. Rounding out the event was a Ferrari, whose outer shell was blessed by Futura as well as an appearance from Lupe Fiasco, Futura’s co-collaborater with […]

Openings: Kazuki Takamatsu – “Spiral of Emotions” @ CHG Circa

Over the weekend, art fans in Los Angeles saw the return of Kazuki Takamatsu and his gradient map textured portaiture in a new show entitled Spiral of Emotions. Exhibiting at CHG Circa (see 2013 at the sister gallery), the Japanese artist brought with him a new set of glowing paintings featuring ghostly silhouettes of children and adolescents, often intermingled with symbols of death and violence. This apparent contradiction between innocence and darker elements gives the work an added layer of complexity. These paintings are best viewed […]

Openings: Curiot – “La Creacion de Nirak’tuh” @ Fifty24Mx

As previously announced, Mexican artist Favio Martinez aka Curiot, opened his first solo show in his hometown of Mexico City at Fifty24Mx Gallery on the 14th of June. Titled La Creacion de Nirak’tuh, this show is probably one of the strongest and most elaborate he has worked on. In collaboration with the gallery, the artist painted the entire interior of the space, giving his works a much needed accent and adding to the depth and visual appearance of his work. The strong influence of traditional Central American art in […]

Recap: James Reka – “Untold” @ Backwoods gallery

James Reka recently escaped the heat of Berlin where he currently lives and works, and visited his hometown of Melbourne in Australia. During his visit, he opened a solo show with Backwoods Gallery that was on view from June 6th until June 17th, introducing a new series of canvas and works on found objects. The Untold show was his first Australian exhibition since relocating to Europe. This body of work was influenced by artist’s observation of Berlin as it wakes up from its winter hibernation and […]

Openings: Futura – “Introspective” @ Magda Danysz (Paris)

Earlier this week, graffiti legend Futura created new work for a Paris show at Magda Danysz Gallery entitled Introspective. Drawing from many of the series of works that have defined his career, the NYC-based artist presented street influenced abstractions, figurative work featuring his pointman character, and paintings that included his famous atom motif. Rounding out the exhibition were a selection of manipulated photos similar to what fans have seen him post on his Instagram for a while now. Recap: Yoskay Yamamoto – “House of Daydreamers” @ Giant Robot 2

Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles recently closed out a show from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) entitled House of Daydreamers. The exhibition highlighted the locally-based artist’s diverse range of works including paintings, installations, and wood sculptures. The title of the show summarizes nicely some of the dreamy imagery that we have come to love from him, along with more literal interpretations. More photos from the opening can be seen below and on Hi-Fructose. Photo credit: Hi-Fructose. Discuss Yoskay Yamamoto here.

Openings: Andy Kehoe – “Inner Mystic” @ Roq la Rue

It’s been a few years since Andy Kehoe’s last show at Roq la Rue, but to say he’s been busy would be an understatement. With several shows since then, the Pittsburgh-based painter continues to hone his skills and evolve as an artist. Woodland animals and anthropomorphized creatures are a mainstay in his work, but his use of resin has really raised the level of dimension, quite literally.  Layers of clear resin are poured into a sealed frame, with each layer painted in a unique fashion, making […]

Openings: Redd Walitzki – “When We Break” @ Roq la Rue

Redd Walitzki didn’t have to go to far for her first solo show at Roq la Rue as her studio is mere blocks away from the gallery. When We Break intertwines seemingly vulnerable subjects with nature and small animals, as flowers erupt from the skin and melt into the milky backgrounds. Some manage to fly out of the panel itself. Aiding in the scenery are intricate panels cut with lasers and what isn’t better with lasers? A few even have adornments making them into three-dimensional displays. […]

Openings: JR – “The Close Up” @ Magda Danysz (Shanghai)

During AM‘s recent trip we stopped by the streets of Shanghai to participate in the phenomenon that is the Inside / Out photobooth truck. Next to follow that up, we stopped by Magda Danysz to catch JR’s (interviewed) latest show. Entitled The Close Up, this exhibition marks the return of the French artist to the gallery’s Shanghai location after four years (see the first show here). The works range from his grand photographs taken from projects around the world to his wood impressions to his haunting eye pieces […]
