Basel Week Miami ’13: NADA Fair (Part I)

Another satellite fair we visited yesterday at Art Basel Week in Miami is the event put on by the New Art Dealers Alliance. The 11th Miami edition of the NADA fair included more than 90 galleries and was held at the Deauville Beach Resort. Their growing list of exhibitors include some familar names like The Hole, Andrew Edlin, Marlborough Chelsea, and Bill Brady KC (seen above with some nice Michael Manning paintings). Basel Week Miami ’13: Untitled Art Fair

Yesterday, we visited one of the satellite fairs for Art Basel Week in Miami – the Untitled Art Fair. In its second year, the event expanded to include 90 galleries and not-for-profit spaces from 19 different countries. Instead of working with a selection committee, the fair uses a curatorial approach trusting the New York-based Omar Lopez-Chahoud to select participants to the invite-only showing. Today marked the official opening of the Art Basel main fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center, but yesterday was the exclusive First Choice & Vernissage where a majority of the high profile buying action took place. Openings: Kris Kuksi – “Revival” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

The Joshua Liner Gallery in New York recently opened a solo exhibition from Kris Kuksi entitled Revival. The intricate and complex sculptural works from the Kansas-based artist plays a perfect contrast to the deceptively simple works from Riusuke Fukahori, who is concurrently showing in the same gallery. Kuksi’s mixed media assemblages explore the dark sides of the human psyche with ornate representations created from model kits and other materials that he has re-appropriated. Last month, the Joshua Liner Gallery in Chelsea presented all new works from Yokohama-based artist Riusuke Fukahori in his New York solo debut. The self-described goldfish fanatic keeps many of them around his studio for inspiration as well as considers them a metaphor for his life. Utilizing a resin technique that took over 8 years to perfect, the layered pieces almost look too real to be paintings, especially when presented in containers that are often associated with the fish in real life. Openings: AJ Fosik – “Against The Infinite” @ Jonathan LeVine

A couple weeks ago, AM stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery to check out new works from AJ Fosik collectively entitled Against The Infinite. Openings: “Three The Hard Way” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Earlier this month, the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland played host to a three-man show entitled Three The Hard Way. The three artists, Christopher Derek Bruno (interviewed), Augustine Kofie (featured), and Jerry ‘Joker’ Inscoe are all members of the Transcend Collective and have evolved their individual aesthetics while drawing from their graffiti background. Berlin’s Circle Culture Gallery recently opened their third gallery space, in addition to its other two venues in Berlin (Mitte and Hamburg). After “twelve years of fusing fine art with pop art and subcultural art,” expansion to a new, 560 sqm former warehouse on Potsdamer Strasse was a logical next step for the gallery. Hailing from New York, Julia Chiang immerses the Midwest this fall with her work via Kansas City’s Bill Brady Gallery. Upon entry to the showspace, you are welcomed by several large “burst” paintings (seen in our studio visit) drawing you directly into the voided spaces within them. Openings: Ryan McGinley – “Body Loud” @ Galerie Perrotin

Over the weekend, Galerie Perrotin in Paris presented 20 new works from photographer Ryan McGinley. Entitled Body Loud, the selection of photos are a continuation of the New York-based artist’s signature imagery taken during summer road trips with his friends, staging and posing them in natural settings with his recognizable aesthetic.
