Openings: Word to Mother – “California Coming Home” @ White Walls

A couple weeks ago, Word to Mother (interviewed) returned to San Francisco’s White Walls (see 2012) for a new solo show. Entitled California Coming Home, the London-based artist’s fresh selection of paintings incorporated Cali imagery around his signature character based on his own persona. Referring nostalgically to times past when he visited the Golden State in his childhood, the pieces express these feelings in a dream-like loose composition. He explains – “When I first visited California it was a time in my life when things were much more simple, […]

Openings: Marco Mazzoni – “Naturama” & Lindsey Carr – “La Petite Singerie” @ Roq La Rue Gallery

There is an old saying that the window to your soul is through the eyes. Marco Mazonni has capatilized on this, by excluding them from his brilliant color pencil drawings. The exclusion mystifies and intrigues, while the surrounding plants, flowers, and familiar animals try to ease our reactions.  Naturama features three larger works and a bounty of smaller pieces on moleskin paper, giving us a detailed look into Mazzoni’s animal kingdom. Several of the smaller pieces feature a monotone palette, with a ball-point pen replacing the usual colored pencils. Mimicking portraits […]

Openings: Mary Iverson – “Sunk” @ Davidson Galleries

AM recently visited Mary Iverson in her studio leading up to the open of her Sunk exhibition. With the work complete, it was time to take it to the masses at Davidson Galleries in Seattle. The large landscapes filled the space with nature, but the veil of over-population and consumerism permeated the scenes as etched lines and shipping containers. There are also some smaller mixed media pieces which tackled the climate change topic and the inevitable rise of the worlds oceans. To cap it off, […]

Openings: Aurel Schmidt – “Fruits” @ 200 Stanton

Last weekend, Aurel Schmidt opened a new showing in New York at 200 Stanton Street that will run through the rest of the month. Entitled Fruits, the body of work on display revisits some of the provocative imagery she is known for with a series of hybrids made from plant and human body parts. With Jeffrey Deitch on hand, attendees took time to wrap their minds around Schmidt’s mutant creations. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Aurel Schmidt here.

Openings: Adam Wallacavage – “Magic Mountain” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, AM stopped by the currently running show from Adam Wallacavage (interviewed) at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. In addition, a limited edition Octopus Tentacle Candlestick was made available for purchase. Take a look at all our photos below… Discuss this show here. Discuss Adam Wallacavage here.

Recently, Cyrcle. arrived in Hong Kong for their latest exhibition titled Home Is Where Your Heart Is. Presented by Above Second Gallery, this new collection of artworks by the L.A. based collective is the 3rd and final part of the ongoing Capture the Flag series which began earlier this year. As with those previous installments, this recent show focused on the mythology behind the Cowboy & Indian as well the evolving definition of what it means to be American. This was the second time that the duo has teamed […]

Openings: Travis Louis – “Strange Discoveries” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Over the weekend, fans in Los Angeles were once again able to enjoy a new body of work from Travis Louie (interviewed) at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery. It’s been couple years since his last showing at the space (see 2011), but the paintings and drawings for Strange Discoveries were well worth the wait. Dedicated to his father who recently passed away, the exhibition featured Louie’s signature dignified portraiture of surreal creatures rendered amazingly to look like vintage photos. Take a look at more shots of the opening below… Photo […]

Openings: Masakatsu Sashie – “Coacervate” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, we stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery to check out a new solo show from Masakatsu Sashie (featured). Included in the exhibition entitled Coacervate (Latin for “to assemble together or cluster”) of course were different permutations of the fan-favorite globes created out of buildings, appliances, vending machines, and other urban man-made elements, but also seen was an impressive sculptural representation (seen above) of the Japanese artist’s signature imagery. Take a look at more opening photos below… Discuss Masakatsu Sashie here.
