Openings: “Space//Form” @ Breeze Block Gallery (Part 1)

(above – Mark Dean Veca, Sven Davis, Paige Prendergast & Michael Murphy)After months of planning and panel wrangling, the Space//Form group exhibition at Portland’s Breeze Block Gallery opened last week. The group show features 110 artists, each making work thematically linked to Architecture and the environment on a 10×10 inch wooden panel provided by Ampersand – the principal sponsor of the exhibit. Openings: David Stoupakis & Matthew Bone – “Ashes To Sorrow” & “Raised By Wolves” @ Last Rites Gallery

Last weekend in New York, the Last Rites Gallery hosted an opening for David Stoupakis (above) and Matthew Bone (directly below) as they unveiled all new paintings. Stoupakis’ dark imagery was apparent as Ashes To Sorrow explored somber fairy-tale like settings rendered beautifully by the locally-based artist. Bone brought a set of works collectively entitled Raised By Wolves with him that combines his love for pop culture and girls, apparently the more drenched the better. Last week, AM attended the much anticipated opening of Futura’s show presented in conjunction with Valmorbida. Held at a sizable Meat Packing district cargo hold, the pop-up exhibition was the perfect location for one of the kings of the street to make a triumphant return to New York City. Last Saturday night, Lola (featured) returned to Los Angeles from her new home across the pond to share a set of new works entitled Haro with her fans at the CHG Circa. Opening just two doors down from the main space, where she showed in 2010, Lola was chosen to be the debut artist for Corey Helford Gallery’s alternate location. Last Saturday night, besides new paintings from Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed), the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York also hosted the opening of Jeff Soto’s (interviewed) solo Decay and Overgrowth. AM stopped by LeBasse Projects in Culver City on Saturday to take in new paintings from Japanese artist Yumiko Kayukawa. Entitled HAKURYUU – White Dragon, the new body of work centered on themes that came about after the devastating earthquake that hit Japan in 2011. Through her work, Kayukawa explores personal coping mechanisms in the aftermath of an unforgettably painful event and hopes the white dragon will be an omen of good fortune for the future of Japan. Openings: Jessica Hess – “Fade and Finish” @ Spoke Art

Last Friday evening, Spoke Art hosted Jessica Hess’s latest exhibition, Fade and Finish. With this body of work, she explored using gouache on paper (as opposed to predominately oil on canvas paintings in previous exhibitions) and depicted urban landscapes in both daylight and moonlight. In this show, she also explored realistically depicting texture that is inspired by wheat pastes in New York, as well as pinup images that grew out of her love of vintage radio and movies. Just this Saturday night, Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) returned to New York City to share a new exhibition at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This fresh body of work entitled Midnight Reverie features new direction for the LA-based artist that has entranced fans of her innocently seductive paintings. Steve “ESPO” Powers’ (featured) recently opened a solo show in New York for the first time in seven years and it was a doozy. Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “New Work” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Just this last weekend, the NY-based Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened a new showing at the Mark Moore Gallery. Bringing with him several tondos as well as his irregularly shaped canvases, Matsu filled the project room with a juxtaposition of eastern and western imagery. Mixing things up, the new body of work also included two works on paper that he placed on a hand-painted wall as well as a re-cast of a 18th century erotic Chinese porcelain figure (customized for the Los Angeles area) that he encased in resin.
