Openings: Pedro Matos – “Heritage” @ Ivory & Black

Last weekend, the Ivory & Black showspace in London hosted the opening for Pedro Matos’ new body of work entitled Heritage. With a series of large paintings (including tondos) and a cluster of smaller pieces, the focus of the Portuguese artist was on his personal and cultural heritage. A couple weeks ago in Corey Helford Gallery, show-goers in Culver City were hit with a healthy does of pink, courtesy of Buff Monster (featured) – on his birthday no less. Legend of the Pink Cherry follows the LA-based artist’s narrative as his main coned character & hero goes on his travels & adventures. Also on display were a series of Garbage Pail Kids inspired paintings entitled The Melty Misfits which were displayed in the loft area. More opening photos after the jump…

A couple weeks ago, the 20th anniversary of cult hit television show Twin Peaks was celebrated with a group exhibition at the Copro Gallery entitled Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Xavier Prou aka Blek Le Rat opens a new exhibition of work to the public at the Opera Gallery in London on Friday 27th April 2012. Despite exhibiting all over the world, this will be the French artist’s first London exhibition since 2008. Last week alongside Greg Simkin’s show at Merry Karnowsky, the works of Johnny Rodriguez (KMNDZ) collectively entitled One Step Beyond were also on display. After bringing to you part one of our coverage of ROA’s showing with StolenSpace, we move from the main space to The Stone Masons at 17 Osborne Street London E1 6TD. This portion of Hypnagogia seemed to be more installation-based, filled with a bestiary of animals from the Belgium-based artist, cleverly dissected on found objects. AM was fortunate enough to be able to trek down recently to Washington D.C. and catch Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) solo exhibition at the Katzen Arts Center at the American University Museum. Aptly titled Thousand Regards, Matsu presented a balanced mix of works that varied from sculptures, paintings to installations to greet the guests visiting the museum. Last week, the StolenSpace Gallery in London hosted a solo exhibition from the Belgium-based ROA at two different locations – their usual space in the Truman Brewery and at The Stone Masons, 17 Osborne Street London E1 6TD. We’ll first focus on the work from the main showspace which included his signature anatomical animal paintings on found objects, installations, and a mural. Openings: Greg Simkins – “Cloud Theory” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

On Saturday night, fans of Greg Simkins (Craola) (featured) were treated to a showing of his first major body of work since his exhibition last year in Canada (covered). Presenting a collection of paintings at Merry Karnowsky that were complex, imaginative, and beautifully rendered, the LA-based artist made sure Cloud Theory was well worth the wait.
