Last Friday, Exhibit A opened up its gallery doors to a multitude of artists all paying tribute to the legendary heavy metal band Metallica. Titled Obey Your Master, the exhibit featured artists such as Shepard Fairey, Travis Louie, David Stoupakis, Nicola Verlato, Brian Viveros, and Richard Villa III just to name a few. Earlier this past fall Paul Kasmin gallery hosted an exhibition featuring the works of contemporary art luminary Frank Stella. The solo show entitled Geometric Variations gave us a look at the colorful works and the iconic squares that helped define part of Stella’s reputation. Openings: Chris Burden – “Metropolis II” @ LACMA

Last week, Chris Burden’s epic kinetic sculpture, Metropolis II, was revealed to the public at the LACMA. The complex and frenetic creation from the LA-based artist took four years to complete and is a model of a miniature city with an emphasis on an intricate transportation system. Included are 18 roadways, including one 6 lane freeway, train tracks, miniature cars, a network of buildings, which support the equivalent of approximately 100,000 cars circulating every hour. Following our earlier coverage largely restricted to original works at London Art Fair, AM is back with a selection of the limited edition prints and other multiples we spotted at Tuesday’s opening. Among the more obvious highly-desirables were a couple of screenprints from the 1960s: Sandra by the recently-deceased Gerald Laing and Untitled (La Lune en Rodage – Carlo Belloli) by Bridget Riley, both at the Sims Reed Gallery booth. Last weekend, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery kicked off the new year with two fresh shows. First was an exhibition curated by one of our favorite street art blogs – the Wooster Collective. Entitled Hybrid Thinking, the group show featured great works from DAL, Herakut, HYURO, ROA, SIT and VINZ. Moving to the next stop in our tour of Damien Hirst’s iconic work in his The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 retrospective occurring across the globe at all branches of the Gagosian, we turn out eyes to Athens. In contrast to the vast Beverly Hill space, the smaller Greek outpost gave us an intimate look at the YBA’s well recognized dotted paintings. More after the jump.

On Tuesday, AM attended the opening of London Art Fair, an event that focuses on modern British and contemporary art, held at the Business Design Centre in Islington. In terms of overall presentation, the most attractive and cohesive booth for us this year is by London’s Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert, featuring works by Bridget Riley, Anthony Caro and Kenneth Armitage. Over the weekend, the Known Gallery exhibited the work of artist Sage Vaughn (featured) in an exhibit titled Last Year. The first solo showing for the UK-based artist at the gallery featured a collection of large woven editions based on his paintings and on his collages from his Envelope Series. Recently, Thinkspace Gallery hosted a solo exhibition by artist Esao Andrews (interviewed) entitled Nowhere. The night featured a great collection of artwork that touches upon various themes which fuse a sense of reality with an aura of the fantastical. Pastel colors contrast nicely with dark colors which give the artwork a sense of brooding and melancholy.
