As mentioned previously in our preview, young Brazilian artist Finok, member of the infamous Vlok crew, recently opened an exhibition in his hometown of Sao Paulo. Hosted by Smith Galleria, Despacho is not only his first big solo show in Brazil, but also his most coherent and complex show to date. Finok spent a big part of the year working on the pieces for the mostly sold-out show, and as evidenced by the positive response from local and worldwide art lovers, all the time and effort put […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Art Miami & CONTEXT

As we continue our survey of Art Basel Week in Miami, we turn our eyes to Art Miami and its sister fair CONTEXT. The combined exhibition space of the two events featured over 190 galleries and covered over 200,000 square feet. Strolling through the booths, we found artist new and old that drew our attention. As with last year, there was the controversial display of un-authenticated work purported to be from Banksy presumably from his recent art residency in New York. Enjoy more of our photos below… Discuss Art […]

Openings: John Brophy – “Breaking The Spell” & Femke Hiemstra – “The Timid Cabbage” Book Release @ Roq La Rue

While most were focused on the art bonanza in Miami, Roq La Rue favorites John Brophy and Femke Hiemstra, shared an open with new works at the Seattle gallery. John Brophy continues to hone his craft, mixing science symbology with religious iconography in Breaking The Spell. Added to the mix this time around are a few individual themes, like the world’s water supply in Oasis, and the companies that produce supergerms, which are literally slapped across a mesmerizing face in Birth of the Gram-Negative Venus. […]

Interviews: Poesia / Graffuturism – “L’Avenir” Group Exhibition

If you follow the Graffuturism blog you’re probably aware of its writer and curator – Poesia. Fans of Nick Walker (interviewed) can always count on two things – intricate stencil work and the iconic The Morning After (TMA) series where his signature “Vandal” runs amuck “beautifying” some of the most prominent cities around the globe. Some may remember East West Connect, the exhibition where Mr. Walker first unveiled (here) this site specific painting of the streets of Hong Kong, entitled Basking in the Glory. After two years, Nick finally makes good with his promise to release this as a 15 color silkscreen. Created in […]
