Openings: Art Basel (Hong Kong)

Yesterday saw the opening of Asia’s preeminent art fair, Art Basel Hong Kong, housed in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC). With a strong tilt towards galleries based in the region, the fair boasted over 170 booths with a plethora of worthy art for collectors and fans to enjoy. Preview: Scott Campbell – “Things Get Better” @ OHWOW

Tomorrow night (May 23rd) at the OHWOW Gallery in Los Angeles, tattoo and fine artist Scott Campbell will be opening a new solo show entitled Things Get Better. The new series of ink paintings depict his “Frankenguns,” hand-made contraptions built inside prisons to administer tattoos to inmates. This culmination of a personal project he started two years ago took him to the inside of Mexican prisons with improvised tools, a true art form that contrasts with superficiality of the contemporary tattoo world. Openings: Takashi Murakami @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

After a succesful showing for Takashi Murakami in Los Angeles at Blum & Poe (covered), the renowned Japanese artist has returned to Asia for a solo showing at Galerie Perrotin in Hong Kong. The show which opened last night includes a selection of paintings & sculptures and was timed nicely to welcome in collectors in town for Art Basel (HK edition). Showing: Agents of Change – ‘Unfolding’ @ David Bloch Gallery

International art collective Agents of Change recently opened a group showing at David Bloch Gallery in Marrakech. Entitled Unfolding, the showing brought together Steve More, Derm, Carlos Mare, LX One, Remi Rough and Jaybo. The AoC cast is ever expanding and contains different styles of art brought in by the widely cast influences of the collective group. Releases: Kid Acne – ‘Oh My Days’ Screenprint

It was hard to miss Kid Acne‘s Oh My Days mural on the side of the Village Underground in London earlier this year. Here at AM we love the Acne sloganeering approach to graffiti and oh happy days that the boy Ackers has just released a screenprint based upon the huge wall. Oh My Days is a 2 colour screenprint, signed numbered and embossed in an edition of 50 and available right now via his shop. Preview: Dan Quintana – “Zero Instruments” @ Varnish Fine Art

This Saturday, May 25th, Varnish Fine Art in San Francisco will be presenting all new works from Dan Quintana. Zero Instruments will consists of oil paintings and charcoal drawings from the Los Angeles-based artist and will feature his surreal landscapes and fantastical creatures. Drawing influence from Bosch, Quintana’s compositions are rife with leering gremlins and demons meshing with his Mel Ramos-esque girls into works that deserve a second look. During Frieze Week, Pace Gallery held the much anticipated opening for Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. The solo exhibition is Nara’s first with the blue chip gallery since joining its esteemed roster in 2011. Last week, fans of ESPO (featured) in Brussels were treated to a new solo from the New York-based artist when Visual Blues opened up at the Alice Gallery. The new body of work centered around a series of small pieces he paints daily called Metaltations as well as larger versions of those pieces.
