On May 14th (4-6pm), New York will be treated to a new show from Aron Wiesenfeld including both oil and graphite works. The San Diego-based artist’s second solo at Arcadia Fine Arts will feature emotive renderings of his young characters traversing desolate landscapes (snow and water seem to appear a lot in this set of works) all infused with his superior storytelling and mastery of light.  If you are in the Big Apple this weekend, we highly recommend adding this to your plans. Teaser / Streets: FAME Festival ’11 – Moneyless (Grottaglie)

As the first artist to make his mark in Italy for the epic urban art festival FAME, Teo Pirisi (aka Moneyless) recently spent a week in the quaint town of Grottaglie, building up the local landscape with a series of his free floating geometric art installations in preparation for the outdoor art gathering that culminates in September. Examining the relationship between materials and design, the Italian artist transforms simple string into industrial architectural forms, often situating them in the rural countryside or derelict metropolitan structures. […]

Openings: Raymond Pettibon – “Blankness Is Not A Void” @ Marc Jancou Contemporary

A couple weekends ago, Marc Jancou Contemporary opened an impressive three person exhibition, entitled Blankness Is Not A Void, of big-time contemporary art players, Raymond Pettibon, Scott Campbell, and the late Steven Parrino. Campbell’s contributions to the show (covered), further developing his signature cut currency full sheets, was nothing short of spectacular. However, punk legend, and founding member of Black Flag, Raymond Pettibon proved his importance to the genre with his crude reinterpretations of iconographic imagery. One of the largest concentrations of his trademarked comic-like […]

Update / Releases: Jeremy Geddes – “A Perfect Vacuum”

Contemporary artist Jeremy Geddes (interviewed) has yet again blown the minds of his fans with the revealing of a recently completed painting. As was the case with his cosmonaut piece included in the Hi-Fructose Group Invitational earlier this year, this is nothing new for the Australian-based artist, who’s mastery of oil paints, attention to detail, and dramatic compositions are truly a sight to behold. The new work, entitled A Perfect Vacuum, departs from Geddes’ much loved cosmonaut series, instead taking a page out of his […]

Teaser: Ryan McGinness – “Redux” @ Subliminal Projects

One stop for Ryan McGinness while he is in Los Angeles for a slew of exhibitions and related events will be Subliminal Projects on June 11th. He’s creating a new body of work based on corporate logos and sponsorship entitled Sponsorship Redux. There will be four paintings and two print editions based on McGinness deconstructing the corporate sponsors’ logos and integrating them into his pieces. The exhibition is followup of his 2003 BlK/Mrkt Sponsorship project where corporation logos were displayed in prominence correlated to their level […]

Vandalog and M.A.N.Y. have teamed up to create a unique group show that will be in New York for a limited time starting today and running through the weekend. Entitled Up Close and Personal, this exhibition will showcase the works from artists who have created large mural works in the past by taking them indoors into the intimate setting of a residential apartment in Manhattan. Works no smaller than a metro card and no bigger than 30 x 30 inches have been created by artists […]

Preview: Jen Stark & Maya Hayuk – “Double Rainbow Rainbow” @ Show & Tell

There will be an interesting pairing of artists tomorrow night at the Shows & Tell Gallery in Toronto with a new exhibition entitled Double Rainbow Rainbow opening. Jen Stark, who is known for her intricately beautiful paper cuttings will be showing alongside NYC-based Maya Hayuk.  Both have shown their mastery in working with colorful patterns – Stark in the three-dimensional and Hayuk in paintings. Of particular interest to AM are these new cylindrical works from Stark that will accompany her usual paper pieces and paintings. […]

Preview / Video: Nate Frizzell – “To Become Myself” @ LeBasse Projects (Chinatown)

Granted the honor of inaugurating LeBasse Projects’ new Chinatown space with its first solo exhibition, Nate Frizzell (interviewed) will aim to kick things off in dramatic fashion with To Become Myself (teased), opening this Thursday, May 13th. Based around a series of charcoal drawings, the body of work will again serve as a major departure from the status quo, bravely mixing up technique in a manner similar to that of the landmark I Should Know Who I Am By Now (covered), which saw the Los […]

Teaser: Greg Simkins – “Escape With Me” @ Yves Laroche

After successfully testing out his curatorial touch with the INLE show (covered) based on the main source of inspiration for his art – the novel Watership Down, Greg Simkins (featured) is starting to focus in on a new collection of paintings. This newest piece, entitled The Nature of Nurture, continues his recent exploration of aquatic life and makes us look forward to seeing what else he has in store for his Canadian fans when he opens up his joint show Escape With Me in June […]

Preview: Hush – “TWIN” @ New Image Art

It looks like Newcastle-based Hush’s (interviewed) will be returning (see 2009) to Los Angeles for another solo show on May 21st, this time at New Image Art. Judging from the photos, his work is becoming increasingly more intricate and textured; something that was evident in his NY show last year (covered). Also, he seems to be moving away from the influences of the Kawaii aspect of Japanese manga and towards a more somber and serious tone. More preview photos from his studio as well as […]
