Preview: “Urban Osmosis” @ Lopo and Space Gallery

It’s been a wonderful run for Spoke Art at Lopo Gallery, but just like 2010, it must come to an end.  Coincidentally, the opening of this final show will be on the ultimate day of the year.  Now-veteran curator Ken Harman presents a show featuring immersive site-specific installations, in three separate rooms, from new and established street and fine art artists.  They include Eddie Colla, Kelly Towles, D Young V, GATS, and the prolific Shark Toof. Ring in your new year surrounded by art and […]

Teaser: “Ed Ruscha: Road Tested” @ Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

Ever since his first road trip (Oklahoma City to Los Angeles) in 1956, Ed Ruscha has been inspired to create work from images he has encountered on the roads of western United States including his famed “Standard Stations” and the “Hollywood Signs” paintings. “Ed Ruscha: Road Tested” at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (on view January 23 – April 17, 2011) will retrospectively consist of approximately 75 works and will include key images based on Ruscha’s love for car culture and travel. Openings: “Postermat” @ The Hole Gallery

AM recently attended The Hole Gallery’s latest show Postermat. The group exhibition was a little different than the typical group show because they went all retro with it. Imagine going back to your childhood and rummaging through mall shops for your favorite posters of sports, rockbands, singers or even comic books – almost everyone had a cheap but cool poster that was maybe mass produced, but meant the world to us. In the same spirit, the good folks at the Hole and Levi’s, got together […]

Releases: Mark Ryden – “Yoshi – The Forest Spirit” Poster

It looks as though there will be a new release from Mark Ryden, a reproduction of his painting Yoshi – The Forest Spirit, based on a painting seen at Art Basel Miami at the Michael Kohn Gallery booth in 2007. Priced at $250, sized at 19 x 23″, and with a run of 1000, the edition will be available presumably on January 15th from Portherhouse with the proceeds to benefit The Nature Conservancy. Discuss Mark Ryden here.

Osgemeos – “Slava’s Head” for The Moulin / Dépayz’arts

It looks like Osgemeos has hooked up with The Moulin again for another project, this time to fashion Slava’s head out of a trailer. The character is taken of the famous Russian clown show – Slava’s SnowShow, which is also the subject of an animation that the Brazilian duo are working on (shown here previously).  The installation will be part of a project called “Dépayz’arts“, held between Dec 27th-31st, with some of the best theater, dance, music, installation and street theatre groups including of course, […]

Openings: “Law of the Jungle” @ Lehmann Maupin

When AM came back from our adventures during Basel Week down in warm Miami, we were greeted back in New York by freezing temperatures. Fortunately, “the twins” made a trip back with us back to the Big Apple. We caught the opening night at Lehmann Maupin Gallery where a great group show curated by Tiago Carneiro da Cunha was on display. The show’s central theme was “survival of the fittest” and featured Efrain Almeida, Caetano de Almeida, Ashley Bickerton, Joshua Callaghan, Marcos Chaves, Saint Clair Cemin, […]

Teaser: David Choe for “Zen Garden” @ JANM

This upcoming Thursday night at the Japanese American National Museum, the Zen Garage exhibition, developed in collaboration between the JANM and Giant Robot’s Eric Nakamura (interviewed), will be open to fans of car culture and art alike. The show features The Super Famicom Car – a retro video game inspired by a converted Scion xB that utilizes projectors from both the front and rear to play video games, Spike – a custom motorcycle by Shinya Kimura, and David Choe’s (featured) custom Monster Scion xB including […]

Openings: Armsrock – “Nocturne On A Drainpipe Flute” (Copenhagen)

Armsrock (interviewed) recently opened up a show in Copenhagen at the Wonderland Art Space entitled Nocturne On A Drainpipe Flute. No stranger to the art of projection as the Danish artist has participated in multiple light projects, this show features 210 drawings on 7 different looping projectors including many of the “images of unrest” that we love.

Teaser: Damien Hirst – “Forgotten Promises” @ Gagosian Gallery (Hong Kong)

To christen their new space in style, the Gagosian in Hong Kong will be hosting Damien Hirst’s Forgotten Promises as their debut show on January 18. After famously celebrating the opening of their Paris branch in October with Cy Twombly, the powerhouse gallery will followup with their first outpost in Asia by bringing the UK badboy along and word is he will be exhibiting his “mini skull” fashioned after child’s skull and adorned with pink diamonds – a scaled-down version of For the Love of […]
