Previews: Dale “Vn” Marshall – “Room 101″

In George Orwell’s novel “1984,” Room 101 was the torture chamber in which citizens were subjected to direct peril from their own worst fears, anxieties and phobias. The worlds of fine art and graffiti merge within Dale Marshall’s (streets) work and have been used as his own Room 101 for a more positive form of therapy. The artist, who also goes by the names Vn and Vermin, is open about his history of mental health issues. The duality of the artist and the exhibition echoes Marshall’s […]

Baby Tattooville ’10: Print Shop Presented by Diesel Fuel Prints

If you collect prints, you’re probably used to pressing a few buttons on your favorite artist’s website and having art show up at your door a few days later in a (hopefully uncrushed) tube.  But do you have any idea how your prints are made or how much effort was put into each piece?  Well, attendees of Baby Tattooville this year now do. At the Secret Society gathering, guests were treated to a special screenprinting demonstration by Andy from Diesel Fuel Prints and had the […]

Baby Tattooville attendees get to bring home loads of goodies, including one-of-a-kind unique original works that they receive as part of their membership, but there is also the opportunity to purchase even more spectacular original art at the Art Sale.  This year’s selection included pieces by honoree Robert Williams, as well as featured artists such as Coop, Van Arno, Anthony Ausgang, and Suzanne Williams.  Also available were works by past artists, including James Jean, Jeff Soto, Tim Biskup, and Johnny “KMNDZ” Rodriguez.  The biggest surprise […]

Openings: Jean-Pierre Roy – “A Rational Spectacle” @ Rare Gallery

Jean Pierre Roy kicked off Rare Gallery’s art season with a breath taking show. The exhibition entitled “A Rational Spectacle” is a series of works based off of Thomas Jefferson’s statement: “the light which has been shed on the mind of man through the civilized world has given it a new direction from which no human mind can divert it.” This quote used in the context of today’s geopolitics of global energy needs vs. the fixed constraints of planetary resources is the fabric which Jean […]

Showing: Kaws – “Passing Through” @ Harbour City (Hong Kong)

Kaws recently opened his “Passing Through” exhibition in Tsim Sha Tsui at the popular Harbour City complex in Hong Kong. The show appears to be a semi-retrospective (see pics a full retrospective here) featuring many of his classic as well as new art figures, sure to be a hit among his many collectors in Asia. Although there did not appear to be any new original paintings as many had hoped, there were some drawings included, a rarity for the artist – and of course the […]

Openings: “Family Tradition” curated by Ron English @ TT Underground Gallery

AM caught the opening of “Family Tradition” at TT Underground Gallery. Curated by Ron English, the group show re-imagines one of the classic mob sagas through the eyes of art. The show featured artists such as Eric White, Travis Louie, Mark Dean Veca, Triston Eaton, Mike Shinoda, Chet Zar to name a few. Check out all the opening night mayhem after he jump.

Releases: Jeff Soto – The Deek @ NYCC

Veteran new contemporary artist and occasional vinyl toy architect Jeff Soto is set to release his newest vinyl creation next Saturday, October 9th at NY Comic Con. Hot on the heels of his Seeker figure recently released at SDCC (covered), The Deek is the next release in the KidRobot Black line, a series of one-off, uber-limited figures sharing a common monochromatic color palette. Standing 6.5″ tall and limited to 150 pieces, the sculpt teased by KR looks to be a bolder, perhaps more enraged relative […]

Baby Tattooville ’10 – Midnight In the Catacombs

Mission Inn’s notorious catacombs, once an underground museum that led mainly to Mt. Rubidoux and the nearby Riverside Evergreen Cemetery, had long been entirely closed off to the public.  Baby Tattooville attendees were lucky enough to be the first group gained admission to these catacombs at Baby Tattooville 2009.  This year, members of Baby Tattooville 2010 were also given the chance to visit the catacombs.  Yet, this time the experience was a bit more relaxed, involving life sketching and complimentary ice cream.  The decor in […]

Baby Tattooville ’10 – Secret Store by Paris to the Moon

Baby Tattooville attendees more often than not are also collectors and lovers of art products. As such, one of their favorite BT activities is shopping at the Secret Store that pops up every yearly gathering. A plethora of goodies were available at the shop, ranging from this year’s featured artists to past ones. There was an Audrey Kawasaki original, a gigantic limited edition print by the man of honor, Robert Williams, customized figures, tons of books, and various other desireables. Those who paid for their […]
