Releases – New Barry McGee Book

After a storied – and seemingly hectic – year that included multiple museum and gallery exhibits (Bolinas, Oakland, Brussels, SFMOMA), the Mission School icon turned street art legend, Barry McGee, has a new book up his sleeve. In what has become a series of similarly conceived of and wonderfully insightful publications by the artist, the newest 176-page hardcover book is presented “as a visual collage, incorporating photographs, drawings, paintings and documentation from past and present installations”. Published by Alleged Press and Damiani Editore, the currently […]

Teaser: KAWS @ Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris)

After “Passing Through” Hong Kong in a giant way (covered), KAWS will be bringing his unique brand of pop art to Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin on November 6th. It was at Perrotin’s Miami location in 2008 where KAWS made some of his first major waves in the fine art world with the Pharrell “curated” exhibit, Saturated, showing the public for the first time some of his impressively rendered, large scale Smurfs and Spongebob themed works. Although he has shown work in a previous group exhibit at […]

Baby Tattooville ’10: “California Kustom” Museum Reception

As blissful and adventurous as the confines of the Mission Inn (where everything usually goes down) are, sometimes it is good to leave and take a field trip during Baby Tattooville. As has become tradition for the event, the Riverside Art Museum, in conjunction with BT, opened an exhibition featuring artists from the weekend-long extravaganza. The show—which unlike other BT events is open to the public—includes fantastic works by Robert and Suzanne Williams, Ron English, Coop, Michael Hussar, Anthony Ausgang, William Stout, Spain Rodriguez, Van […]

Openings: Brian Viveros – “The Dirtyland” @ Thinkspace Gallery

A couple weeks ago, Brian Viveros’ “The Dirtyland” exhibition opened at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. The immersive exhibition featured paintings, drawings, one-off hand-finished prints, installations, sculptural work (with the help of Gustavo Ponce), and video from the Riverside based artist all inspired by his fascination with Hispanic culture in general (bull-fighting, day of the dead, luchadores, etc) and of course, nicotine. When we visited his studio before the show, Brian was really excited to have a large space all to himself to fully […]

Preview: Know Hope – “There is Nothing Dear (There Is Too Much Dear)” @ Show & Tell Gallery

Israel’s Know Hope will be opening his show tonight in Toronto at the Show & Tell Gallery. The prolific street artist has creatively fashioned together some found objects and painted them with his signature imagery for this new body of work entitled “There is Nothing Dear (There Is Too Much Dear)” (teased). Also included will be works on paper featuring his long-armed characters and some words of wisdom. More after the jump…

Baby Tattooville ’10 – “Late Night Madness” with Michael Hussar

Michael Hussar returned for Baby Tattooville 2010 and once again graciously hosted one of the key events of the special weekend. Each night, Hussar’s suite became the site for non-stop late night festivities. BT attendees joined in on sketching the models in one room, while artists such as Ron English, Johnny “KMNDZ” Rodriguez, Van Arno and Robert Williams could be seen participating in photoshoots with the models, sketching under Sketch Theatre and just flat out partying. Great art, beautiful models and partying until the morning… […]

Showing: Irina Davis – “Nice Girls” @ Sputnik Gallery

Sometimes it’s good to take a second look. That’s what happened when we did a double-take at Sputnik Gallery and discovered Irina Davis. When we first passed by her alluring works, we thought they were simply painted pin-up model pieces. But then upon closer inspection, we noticed that they were real models in pin-up poses. The twist that got us is that Irina actually paints the faces and certain details with watercolor to give the realistic photos a touch of fantasy and character. Davis’ show […]

It sounds like a compelling event in the name of […]

Previews: Dale “Vn” Marshall – “Room 101″

In George Orwell’s novel “1984,” Room 101 was the torture chamber in which citizens were subjected to direct peril from their own worst fears, anxieties and phobias. The worlds of fine art and graffiti merge within Dale Marshall’s (streets) work and have been used as his own Room 101 for a more positive form of therapy. The artist, who also goes by the names Vn and Vermin, is open about his history of mental health issues. The duality of the artist and the exhibition echoes Marshall’s […]
