Preview: Morgan Lehman Gallery @ Pulse NY 2010

Of course, during Armory Week, there are plenty of other fairs in addition to the main Armory show. One of AM’s perennial favorites is Pulse, which is dedicated to showing only contemporary artists, and thus always feels fresh and new. One booth we’re looking forward to seeing at Pulse this year is Morgan Lehman, who will be showing exciting young artists including Paul Wackers, Eric Beltz, Andrew Schoultz and Ryan Wallace. See preview images, after the jump.

Preview: R. Crumb – “The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb’s Book of Genesis” @ David Zwirner

Opening March 4 at Chelsea’s David Zwirner is the latest exhibition of original art work from infamous cartoonist R. Crumb. For this show, Crumb will have drawings from his controversial comic version of the first book of the Old Testament, entitled “The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb,” which after a half decade in the making was released late last year. This exhibition was previously at UCLA’s Hammer Museum. See an installation view and some additional images from that show, after the jump.

Studio Visits / Preview: Rosson Crow – “Bowery Boys” @ Deitch Projects

This past weekend AM had a chance to stop by Rosson Crow’s Brooklyn studio where she graciously gave us a sneak preview of her upcoming Deitch Projects show “Bowery Boys” opening on March 4th. As the name implies, Rosson uses her loose and dreamy abstract style to reinterpret the landscape & culture of downtown Manhattan. Working within the storied hall/traditions of Deitch Projects, Rosson dares to nostalgically re-imagine the “bad boy” underground streets artists of yesteryear and their impact on the urban culture of NYC. Some of […]

Preview: Manifest Equality – Pop Up Show

Some of you may remember our coverage from DC during inauguration week where Shepard Fairey sponsored a pop up show called Manifest Hope. The show was a roaring success drawing together artists from across the nation in their support of the Obama campaign and it’s creation of “Hope.” Now, the show has transitioned to a new theme of equality and it’s next stop is Los Angeles. Manifest Equality enlists another stellar group of artist such as Barry McGee, El Mac, Clare Rojas, Gary Baseman, Tim […]

Video: ARCO Madrid

ARCO, Madrid’s most prestigious international contemporary arts fair opened with over 220 galleries from 25 countries in town to display their “wares.” We recently showed you some work from KAWS at the fair, and although the fair is not closed, here is a video walkthrough of the event by Vernissage TV that might also interest you.

Preview: Mizuma Art Gallery @ Armory 2010

Tokyo’s Mizuma Art returns to New York City this week to participate in Armory 2010, and to whet our appetites before the fair, they sent us a few preview images. Unlike at Art Basel Miami, where the gallery had a solo show with conceptual/video artist Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba (covered), at Armory, Mizuma will be showing a variety of works by their stable of emerging and mid-career Japanese artists, including such AM favorites as Ai Yamaguchi, Akino Kondoh, Tomoko Konoike and Masakatsu Sashie. See preview images, after […]

Openings: Haze x Stussy @ Known Gallery

After taking New York by storm last November, Eric Haze moved on to his next project, a show at the newly opened Known Gallery to coincide with the US release of the Haze x Stussy S/S 2010 collection. With Cut Chemist on the 1’s and 2’s, the gallery was packed with fans of the legendary graf writer and streetwear trendsetter. They were rewarded with framed pieces of the original art created for the collection, a custom built display of the finished products, video installations, and […]

Openings: Five-Year Anniversary Group Exhibition @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

This past weekend, Jonathan LeVine opened their five-year anniversary group show, featuring works from an extensive list of artists who have been instrumental in the New York gallery’s success, including Adam Wallacavage, AJ Fosik, Andrew Brandou, Andy Kehoe, Blek le Rat, Chris Mars, Dan Witz, Date Farmers, Dave Cooper, Doze Green, Eric White, Erik Mark Sandberg, Esao Andrews, Gary Baseman, Gary Taxali, Invader, Isabel Samaras, James Jean, Jeff Soto, Jim Houser, Josh Agle (aka Shag), Kathy Staico Schorr, Mark Dean Veca, Miss Van, Natalia Fabia, […]

Weekend Chelsea Art Walk, Part 2

Continuing on with our walking tour of Chelsea (see part 1 from yesterday here), we stopped at Metro Pictures on 24th Street to see “Midnight Madness,” the latest show by painter Gary Simmons. Simmons’ “erasure” style – he uses oil paint, pigment and cold wax to produce ghostly smeared images on textured backgrounds – works perfectly with his current theme: horror-movie houses and old theater marquees. His rendering of the Bates House from Hitchcock’s 1960 classic “Psycho” (pictured above) was particularly effective: huge and looming, […]

Openings: Mike Giant @ Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea – Milan

Following his successful show last year at France’s Magda Danysz (covered), Mike Giant returned to the EU to open his “Welcome to Frisco” show last Thursday night at Milan’s Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea.  Featuring his trademark clean lines and tattooed subjects, Giant’s showing looks to be a great introduction to the San Francisco aesthetic and culture for the Milanese people. More pictures after the jump.
