Banksy – “Exit Through the Gift Shop” Lambeth Palace Special Screening

After screening at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals, Banksy’s “Exit Through the Gift Shop” documentary premiered in the UK at a some special screenings early this week in a tunnel underneath the Waterloo train station dubbed “Lambeth Palace.” Of course, anything the famous street artist puts on is not a simple affair.  The evening came complete with multiple installations like a red carpet painted on the street, his “Paranoid Pictures” logo, the animatronics from his “Village Store and Charcoal Grill” pop up show, as […]

Showing: Victor Castillo – “Strange Fruit” @ Merry Karnowsky

Showing alongside a fantastic new body of work from Miss Van at Merry Karnowsky was the mischievous and devious (see what we did there?) paintings of Victor Castillo (previewed). His not-so-innocent sausage-nosed children could be seen feasting on some unknown meat dujour, perusing pornography, and partaking in some forbidden or “strange fruit.” All the photos we took after the jump…

Weekend Chelsea Art Walk, Part 1

New York City is currently digging out from yet another snowstorm. But last weekend, the weather in New York was beautiful, and luckily, we took advantage of the brief window of sun to spend the day strolling around Chelsea popping in and out of art galleries. And even more luckily, we saw lots of amazing art – so much so that it was too much to talk about in just one post. So, enjoy part 1 of our virtual Chelsea stroll today, and check back […]

Preview: “Curious and Curiouser” @ Nucleus Gallery

We recently told you about an upcoming show, book release, and signing tour from Camille Rose Garcia surrounding her new illustrated Alice in Wonderland book.  Tomorrow night, another Alice in Wonderland tribute show is opening at Nucleus Gallery entitled “Curious and Curiouser”, a nod to the famous quote from Alice when she began growing taller after eating the cake labeled “Eat me.” Not only will there be some fantastic art like the pieces seen above from Amy Sol (interviewed) of Alice, the rabbit, and the […]

Just Closed: Inka Essenhigh – “The Old New Age” @ 303 Gallery

We were able to catch Inka Essenhigh’s latest show “The Old New Age” at 303 Gallery just before it closed last Saturday, and we were glad we did. Whereas the surrealist painter’s works had previously been abstract compositions with forms that hinted of being representational of people and landscapes, her current pieces are for the most part figurative, portraying enchanted scenes of forests and goddesses. Her bright palates and fantastic images bring to mind stills from beautifully rendered animated stories. See all the images, after […]

Openings: Shepard Fairey – “Supply & Demand” @ Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center (Day 2)

Friday afternoon picked up right where Thursday evening left off (covered). Members of the Contemporary Art Center (CAC) were invited in at 6 pm for a one hour open bar, prior to Shepard’s artist talk at 7 pm. The talk was moderated by show curator Pedro Alonzo, and covered a wide range of topics from the last 20 years, beginning with the creation and dissemination of the original Andre the Giant sticker, all the way up to and including Shepard Fairey’s ongoing legal struggles with […]

Releases: Supakitch – “Supamoto” @ Pigment Editions

Dropping 1pm Eastern today at Pigment Editions is a sick new print by our Gallic homeboy Supakitch. The 18 x 24″ print, entitled “Supamoto,” is no giclee, ink-jet, rolled-out in mass quantities. Instead,  it’s truly a love-labored collaboration between artist and master printer – using only the best homemade archival inks on nice thick paper. And the run is tiny, with only 20 of the limited yellow version, and a mere 2 of the super-limited special blue version. Check out more pics, including details of […]

Preview: Five Year Anniversary Group Exhibition @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be holding their Five Year Anniversary Group Exhibition this Saturday with many of the artists that we have grown to love over the last half decade. Of course, the show boasts a stellar list of artists including Jeff Soto, James Jean, Andy Kehoe, Mark Dean Veca, Adam Wallacavage, Erik Sandberg, and Ray Caesar. Take a look at preview images from these artists as well as the full roster on the showcard after the jump…

Just Closed: Scott Daniel Ellison – “The Birthday Party” @ ClampArt

While wandering around Chelsea, we happened upon “The Birthday Party,” a fun show at ClampArt by New York-based artist Scott Daniel Ellison. We were not familiar with Ellison’s work but were immediately intrigued by the groupings of small illustrative paintings – dark yet humorous – with a painting style reminiscent of Marcel Dzama’s earlier painting style, but perhaps more expressionistic. Many of the works had sold, which was not surprising given the quality and the very affordable prices. Unfortunately, Saturday was the last day of […]

Releases: Tomokazu Matsuyama x Medicom Bearbrick

Recently, we stopped by Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama’s (interviewed) Brooklyn studio (here) and saw one of the coolest things he’s working on – a Bearbrick with famed toy makers Medicom on their next artist series release. Their last official design collab was 2 years ago with Kaws. The bearbrick is customized with a special pattern created by Matsu. It will come in a set that has both a 400% and 100% bearbrick. Like all artist collab bearbricks, these will be hard to find as there will […]
