Showing: Tom French – “Paralax” @ Unit London

On the 1st of June, Unit London opened a new exhibition of work by Tom French (featured) titled Parallax. Through this show, the London-based artist explores the literal, metaphorical and metaphysical manifestations of perspective and visual perception through his expressive monochromatic works. Stepping away from his previous work that used illusion and double images, French is this time focusing on the apparent displacement of his subject matter and its relation to the viewer. With this in mind, he snatches his figures, preserves them in oils with photographic clarity and incorporates them within abstract […]

Showing: Greg “Craola” Simkins – “No Strings” @ KP Projects Gallery

Currently at KP Projects Gallery in Los Angeles, Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) has a show on view through June 17th entitled No Strings. The new body of imaginative work features paintings (including the massive 6′ x 9′ piece seen above), drawings, as well as a few limited editions. Continuing to explore the rich world he has created, the locally-based artist was inspired by the story of Pinnochio and the idea of escaping reality which can be seen in the surreal imagery featuring his signature hybrid amalgamations as well as some more […]

Releases: KAWS – “Blush Companion”

Just released this morning, the Blush edition of KAWS’ Companion figure is still available on his website. The two versions (regular and flayed) are both open editions and retail for $200 each. If you remember, word on these first surfaced around the time the Brooklyn-based artist opened his show in Shanghai. Discuss KAWS here.

Previews: Kisung Koh – “Long Live the Polar Treasure” @ Thinkspace

This Saturday night (June 3rd), Thinkspace’s project room will play host to Kisung Koh’s first solo exhibition with the Culver City gallery. The Toronto-based painter is another young artist whose imagery touches on environmental issues as is evident with his choice of subject matter for this showing. Entitled Long Live the Polar Treasure, the new collection of oil paintings from Koh is entirely dedicated to the endangered polar bear and the displacement from its habitat, paralleling the Korean artist’s own life experiences of “deracination and the pangs of dislocated belonging.”

Previews: Fuco Ueda – “Yumei” @ Dorothy Circus Gallery

On June 9th, Dorothy Circus Gallery in Rome will be hosting a new solo show from Fuco Ueda entitled Yumei. Extensively utilizing natural materials in her work like powdered mineral pigments on paper, cloth and wood, together with acrylic paint, the Japanese artist has created a new body of work that lingers between reality and the dream world. Here ethereal paintings are accentuated by a vibrant palette leading to an almost photo negative effect for her surreal scenes featuring her female characters and strange flora. Discuss Fuco […]

Previews: Shawn Huckins – “Somewhere to Nowhere” @ Goodwin Fine Art

Following up on his show there last year (covered), Shawn Huckins (featured) will be opening Somewhere to Nowhere at Goodwin Fine Art on June 9th. The new distinctive text-based works are a response to his previous body of work where he overlaid today’s digital conversations (complete with abbreviations and mistakes) over scenes of traditional 18th and 19th century paintings. This time around, he uses phrases he finds from traditional pen and paper communications from a time when words seemed to be chosen more carefully and more meaningful and combined it with […]

Upcoming: Vhils – “Debris” @ Navy Yard No.1 – Contemporary Art Center (Macau)

Following up on an exhibition in the neighboring Hong Kong (covered), Vhils (filmed) will be opening a show on May 31st at Navy Yard No.1 – Contemporary Art Center in Macau. Entitled Debris, like his exhibition in HK, this event was organized with the support of the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Foundation (HOCA) and will lead to an interesting body of work from the Lisbon-based artist seeing as this Special Administrative Region of China used to be a Portuguese colony. Of course, the new work will feature Vhils’ unique mark-making […]

Upcoming: Josh Keyes – “Implosion” @ Thinkspace Gallery

On August 5th, Los Angeles will finally getting that big solo show from Josh Keyes (interviewed) at Thinkspace Gallery that his fans have been waiting for all these years. It looks as though Implosion will have some paintings that continue his recent works that feature graffiti in natural and unusual settings. We’ll have more about the exhibition for you as it gets closer to the opening but for now, enjoy another preview image below… Discuss Josh Keyes here.
