NYC’s pre-Thanksgiving art feast

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and AM is already in a festive (read: tongue-in-cheek) mood thinking about the bountiful meal that is the main attraction of the holiday. But even with our mind turning to delicious turkey and pie, we can’t resist the cornucopia of artistic delights being generously offered this November by the galleries of New York City. Let’s give thanks for the three-course feast for the eyes we are about to receive, after the jump.

Openings: Chloe Early @ Stolenspace

A fast rising star in the UK art scene, Chloe Early opened her solo show Ladies and Gentleman We Are Spinning in Space this weekend at StolenSpace Gallery in London. Chloe’s fantastical works provide a window into a blended world where abstract meets architectural backdrops. Using linen or aluminum mediums, Chloe weaves environments where reality/fantasy, urban/jungle converge and intertwine. Her pieces often use a human (often a diver) to work in parallel with the world it inhabits to create her dreamy snapshots. This body of work […]

Openings: Clowns! @ Corey Helford Gallery

The Clowns! (previewed) show opened last night in Culver City and AM contributor Marcus was on hand to snap some photos. This group show had a pretty unique and strong lineup as Corey Helford teamed up with Stolenspace (UK) to exhibit artists from both sides of the Atlantic. Photos of all the work after the jump.

Teaser: This is China @ BLVD Gallery

“This is China” is a show organized by Red Star Press that is opening next month in Seattle featuring urban and graffiti artists from China including 0528, Steel Dan, Soos, Cui Nan, Ha Shiyou, Zhang Qitian, Popil, Shen Jingdong, and Yang Jun.  “Graffiti is considered a serious crime in China, and violators incur harsh penalties from the government. Ironically, the Chinese government recently commissioned a number of public graffiti pieces during the 2008 Olympics to portray positive messages about China and the Olympic games. Local […]

Preview: APAK @ Junc Gallery

APAK has a three person show opening tonight at Junc Gallery with Betsy Walton and Aya Kakeda. For those not familiar with the duo, APAK consists of a husband and wife team, Aaron Piland and Ayumi Kajikawa respectively, hence their name. Their rich and colorful paintings of creatures living in a utopian society are a breath of fresh air in this genre. Their work bring us back to a time before modern technology and industry when people seemed more willing to make time to enjoy […]

Teaser: Chris Berens @ Roq La Rue

We are really looking forward to Dutch artist Chris Beren’s show at Roq La Rue next month.  Beren’s works look almost digital or like photography, but it is all hand-painted.  The unique “look” to his paintings are result of his long painstaking process – taking many steps.  Many of his characters appear to have a fuzzy, unfocused look to them like they were photos taken with a soft-focus lens on.  Look for his new wonderfully imaginative body of work entitled “Go West” to begin showing […]

Preview: Clowns! @ Corey Helford Gallery

What do you get when you have an enormous group of talented artists take their own spin on a modern day “clown”? Well, for their newest show Clowns!, Corey Helford assembled a diverse group and let them loose on this simple theme and the results? A veritable carnival of visual delights! How often does one see the likes of Dave Kinsey, Shag, Audrey Kawasaki, Gary Baseman work off the cuff with a subject that is foreign to their repertoire? If that wasn’t enough, Corey Helford […]

Openings: Candice Tripp @ Lazarides (Newcastle)

We were pretty impressed with the setup of Candice Tripp’s show (previewed) after seeing photos from the opening last night. Lazarides (Newcastle) really put time and effort into staging the pieces even using one of the images from her previous paintings as the wallpaper. Photos after the jump.

Preview: Fuco Ueda @ Court Gallery Kunitachi

Japanese artist, Fuco Ueda has a new show Symbiosis at Court Gallery Kunitachi (Tokyo) with the official opening reception being this Saturday, November 15th. Her signature girls with the raw knees and the use of creative imagery along with dreamy powdery backgrounds have been a hit in the U.S. pop surrealist scene a while now.  She’s held her own with sold out shows exhibiting along side artists such as Audrey Kawasaki and Esao Andrews.  Her main audience however is in Asia and we have some […]
