Studio Visits / Previews: Shepard Fairey – “Printed Matters” @ Subliminal Projects

AM recently stopped by Shepard Fairey’s (featured) secret secondary studio where much of his “fine art” is actually made. Officially called “Studio Number Two”, the hidden industrial space houses the heavy lumber for his coming show “Printed Matters” at Subliminal Projects. After the sold out show at Deitch Projects, Shep decided to create a body of work based on his signature silkscreening technique. Utilizing mediums of metal, wood and hand painted multiples (HPMs), he and his talented crew took the entire summer building up the […]

Openings: James Jean – The “Birds and Boys” Series @ 3.1 Phillip Lim – Fashion’s Night Out

High fashion and fine art was exhibited in a seamless mix as James Jean unveiled his Birds and Boys series at 3.1 Phillip Lim during Fashion’s Night Out in West Hollywood. Jean’s fantastically cool portraits of the famous and the beautiful of Los Angeles were hung throughout the store, occupying the same racks as Lim’s elegantly designed threads. The city’s most stylish and hip made it out and the proceeds from the sale of the artist’s work helps to benefit the LACMA Costume Council.  With […]

Preview: Herakut – “Hope’s Reply” @ Lebasse Projects

This Saturday night, German duo Herakut will be opening their show, “Hope’s Reply”, at LeBasse Projects. As opposed to previous exhibitions where they have gone all out on installations, but this time, the new body work work will be displayed in what’s billed as a more “white walls” setting. Take a look at some more teaser shots sent to us from CampBarbossa after the jump…

Studio Visits / Preview: Mark Dean Veca – “When The Shit Hits The Fan” @ Western Project

A little while back, we stopped by Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) studio to get a glimpse at his new body of work “When The Shit Hits The Fan” – a kind of metaphor for the state of the world today. The show opening next Saturday night, Sept 18th, at Western Project will be his first solo show in Los Angeles and is a collection of thematically cohesive paintings he has been working on since his show at Jonathan LeVine last year. With some of his […]

Preview / Setup: Andrew Schoultz – “Compound Eyes on the World” @ Marx & Zavattero

Opening on September 11, the show many San Franciscans have been waiting for –  Andrew Schoultz returns to his hometown for his second solo exhibition at Marx & Zavattero.  If it’s Schoultz, you can be sure it involves dense, colorful, kinetic, immersive, and choatic artwork, as is evidenced by these preview shots.  For this show, the artist explores the nature of history and the reconciliation of meaning versus the vast amount of information available today.  If you are in town, you are best served to […]

Edwin (who will be showing jointly with Yoskay Yamamoto) also has a surprise for fans attending his opening – 30 limited edition diecuts to giveaway – you just have to tell him a ghost story. Diecut and more preview images after the jump…

Previews: Esao Andrews – “Solid Void” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Better make plans to stop by Jonathan Levine Gallery this Saturday. Esao Andrews will open his latest solo show, “Solid Void”, along with peer Alex Gross (interviewed) and his solo show. The darkly imaginative artist continues to explore the confines of his talented imagination. His use of colors to compliment his ultra fine brush work is something that has to be seen in person. After his last sold out show at JLG a few years ago and his most recent show at Thinkspace last year, […]

Preview: Murakami @ Versailles

Next week will be pretty big for contemporary art in France. Not only is Jeff Koons opening his newest show in Paris, his pal Murakami will be opening his exhibition in Versailles, just like Koons did in 2008. As with Koons, some of the French have been protesting the superflat master and several of his “controversial” works, but it is not clear whether pieces like “Lonesome Cowboy” or “Hiropon” will be included. There are reportedly 22 pieces in the show, half of which will be […]
