Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Jeff Soto x Jonathan Levine Gallery

Riverside native Jeff Soto (interviewed) will be one of the featured artists with Jonathan Levine Gallery this year at the SCOPE satellite fair. No stranger to Art Basel Week, Soto will be participating in multiple projects and exhibitions (more later), but probably will have the most work dedicated to this mini-show. Expect to see his usual acrylic on wood works and also his continued explorations into watercolor as you can see by “Rock Pile I” (above). More preview images via Soto’s blog after the jump…

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – “Stages” @ O.H.W.O.W. Gallery

After it’s start in France in July, “Stages” will make its final stop before the paintings going to the homes of collectors (purchased to benefit LIVESTRONG).  The exhibition will be on location at this year’s Art Basel Miami at O.H.W.O.W. Gallery (Dec 4 – Dec 6) and like the show’s recent stop in NY, several artists were added to the traveling exhibition – this time, the Clayton Brothers (featured), Erik Parker, and Tomoo Gokita (currently showing at Honor Fraser). Take a look at the Parker […]

Preview: Death of Vivisect @ Gallery 1988 (LA)

“Vivisect VI” or the “Death of Vivisect” is set to open tomorrow at Gallery 1988 (LA).  One of the first annual group shows at g1988, the Luke Chueh (interviewed) co-curated exhibition focuses on artists who employ animals in their work to convey the human condition. Now in it’s sixth installment, this will be the final in the series so make sure you show up to say farewell to this signature show once and for wall. More preview images after the jump…

Preview: Sashie Masakatsu – “De Facto Standard” @ Mizuma Gallery

Masakatsu Sashie is preparing to show back at his home country of Japan at Mizuma Galley after a recent show in LA. Opening this Saturday, November 26th, the show will run until the day after Christmas. We expect his signature urban orbs floating over ominous landscapes, but as the title of the show also hints at, Sashie is not merely content with having his art meet some arbitrary “De Facto Standard.” He seeks to push his talents to another level. This latest body of work also […]

Preview: David Choe – “Grifters” Group Show @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

As we mentioned in our teaser, “Grifters” will be rolling into town early next month at Rathbone Place. However, it looks like David Choe is already in London getting ready for the super-group show at Lazarides as well as wreaking havoc on the streets. Take a look at some more watercolors he’s been working on as well as a collab piece he threw up (unfortunately buffed already) – all after the jump…

Preview: Damien Hirst – “Nothing Matters” @ White Cube

Damien Hirst continues his attempt to paint as well as Rembrandt (easy according to him) with a solo show tonight at White Cube (both Hoxton Square and Mason’s Yard locations) in London. Barely a month after his opening at the Wallace Collection (in fact, show there continues until the end of January), the formaldehyde king returns with 19 new paintings. This body of work is heavy with omens and foreshadowings of death including crows, blood splatters, skeletal forms, skulls and empty chairs among other things […]

Influential American artist, Raymond Pettibon will be opening a exhibition tonight in London at Sadie Coles HQ. Included in the show will be a series of new drawings along with a number of seminal pieces from the 1980’s. Definitely take time to attend this show if you are in the UK and also look for more coverage of Pettibon’s show coming up at World Class Boxing at this year’s Art Basel Miami. Another image after the jump…

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Team Gallery x Ryan McGinley

After having been featured by Team Gallery at Art Basel Switzerland, the gallery is bringing Ryan McGinley’s newest works to Art Basel Miami.  The photographs being shown at the fair continues his Moonmilk series (remember his show at Alison Jacques Gallery?) and also includes some images from his most recent road trip.  The settings involve locations deep beneath the earth’s surface and now some on or above it.  They integrate the nude body into scenes of nature, almost blending them into one. More images and […]

Preview: Simon Birch – “Small Wonder” @ 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong

Simon Birch has been busy preparing for “Small Wonder,” his major solo exhibition opening Wednesday, November 25th at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong. The show consists of thirteen dramatic large scale oil paintings. Born in Brighton, England, Simon left the UK to spend time traveling through Australia before relocating to Hong Kong in the mid-nineties. From his early days as a construction worker to his first self-financed exhibition, he has now become one of Asia’s most sought-after emerging artists. In anticipation of the show, we bring […]
