Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Sloan Fine Art x Chris Berens

Chris Berens fans attending Art Basel are in for a treat his year as Sloan Fine Art will feature several pieces from him in their booth at SCOPE as a preview to his big New York show opening at their gallery on December 16th. Berens’ soft focus and imaginative work is a result of a unique and time-consuming process and are often homages to the Dutch master painters of yore. We have become increasingly enamored with his work after recent shows in Seattle and Amsterdam […]

Studio Visits / Preview: Tristram Lansdowne @ LE Gallery, Toronto

AM got hooked on Tristram Lansdowne’s urban landscape paintings when we saw his work featured earlier this year at Joshua Liner Gallery’s summer group show (covered), so we tried to find out as much as we could about this exciting young artist. Lansdowne has a solo show entitled “Entropical Paradise” opening on 27th November at Toronto’s LE Gallery. Judging from the work we’ve seen in progress here, this show looks like one to catch if you can. Based in Toronto, Tristram’s watercoloured architectural representations depict […]

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Scope x New Image Art x Judith Supine

Art Basel Miami is just around the corner and AM is excited to be providing on-site coverage of the biggest stateside art fair of the year (just like we did last year). In the next couple weeks, you’ll see more previews leading up to Basel, but we will start things off with telling you about New Image Art and their focus on Judith Supine this year. They will be bringing multiple pieces from the collage master to SCOPE (one of the satellite fairs), and we can’t wait […]

Preview: Switcheroo x Flopdoodle Holiday Party

If you are near Pasadena tonight, you might want to stop by the Switcheroo x Flopdoodle Holiday Party put on by Tim Biskup, Amanda Visell, and Michelle Valigura. Fresh off his big show last weekend, Biskup is back in action – this time with collaborative sculptures with Visell – the centerpiece of the night, a “HelperCentaurEphunt” (seen after the jump) limited edition wood figure. As you can see by the image above, it will consist of Biskup’s iconic “Helper” and Visell’s iconic elephant figures squeezed […]

Preview: Yoko Tanaka @ David B. Smith Gallery

Tonight is the opening of artist and illustrator Yoko Tanaka’s show at David B. Smith Gallery – part of a three person show with Katherine Guillen and Andrea Offerman. We have long admired Tanaka’s fanciful landscapes and her charming anthropomorphic animals, of which there are plenty in this new body of work. If you are in Denver, definitely stop by as Tanaka will be making a rare appearance all the way from Thailand. More preview images after the jump…

Studio Visits: Kelsey Brookes

Kelsey Brookes invades the sacred halls of Quint Contemporary Art this evening. The gallery has been around for almost 30 years now and is one of the most well respected spaces in the San Diego art scene, with several of their artists being picked for inclusion in the prestigious Whitney Museum of American Art’s Biennale in years past. For Kelsey, a San Diego based artist, this is a shining moment in his young career. For his debut solo show with the gallery, Kelsey has delivered […]

There will also be live art performances by Kevin Tong, Harry […]

Preview: Naoto Hattori – “Out There” @ M Modern

This Friday, Japanese sensation Naoto Hattori will be bringing psychedelic art to the desert – Palm Springs to be exact. “Out There” opens at M Modern and will feature his usual bizarre animals, distorted heads, and imaginative landscapes. Although Hattori specializes in imagery that is grotesque to say the least, there is a strange sense of beauty that he infuses in all his paintings, perhaps in no small part due to the insane amount of detail he puts into each piece. More preview images after […]

Preview: Kris Kuksi “Beast Anthology” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Sometimes a title to the show says it all… “Beast Anthology” – Kris Kuksi is a beast! His behemoth sculptures have us all in awe. Here at AM headquarters, we’ve been looking forward to seeing this one since we visited his last sold out show at Joshua Liner Gallery (covered). The opening is this Saturday (Nov. 21st) from 6-9pm and it couldn’t be sooner. Kris’ signature hyper-detailing and the amazing compositions just boggles our senses. This past August, we teased you with his gorgeous creation for the show: “The Temptation of […]
