Update / Setup: Barry McGee @ BAM/PFA

San Francisco-based Barry McGee returns for his first Bay Area solo museum exhibition in 18 years at BAM/PFA (UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive). This will mark his first midcareer survey, in which all of his previous major installations have been reinterpreted and put under one roof (from his van installation at REDCAT to his Street Market at Deitch to a 1999 stolen mural that was placed on Howard Street in San Francisco, just to name a few). This exhibition as been three […]

Preview / Setup: “The Composite Knowledge” @ 1AM

This Friday night at the First Amendment Gallery (1AM) in San Francisco, three artists will be joining forces to present The Composite Knowledge. Like many graffiti artists out there, Jaybo Monk, Poesia, and Sam Rodriguez are exploring what it means to transition from writers to the fine art world.  By fusing spray techniques learned on the streets with the paintbrush more often used in the studio, these artists attempt to strike a balance between both environments. Check out some of these set up photos curator […]

Previews: Lush – ‘You Become What You Hate…’ pop-up show in Hackney Wick, London

Melbourne-based Lush opens his first UK solo exhibition, You Become What You Hate…, tonight at a warehouse space in London’s Hackney Wick. The show includes installations, sculptures, paintings, sketches, prints, t-shirts and zines. If you enjoy Lush’s deliberately offensive, illustration-style work, it promises to be a fun spectacle: sexually explicit imagery of large-scale vaginas, fornicating unicorns, rainbow-coloured guts, urine and ejaculate, scenes of gratuitous violence, and various pieces based on the theme of ACAB / All Cops Are Bastards. Knowingly biting the hand that feeds […]

After a successful showing in Los Angeles, along with performances based on their imagery from the Lucent Dossier crew (covered), artistic duo Herakut moves up the coast for a followup showing at 941 Geary. Opening on April 21st, Loving the Exiled will be focusing in on characters that have fallen from grace – “the abandoned child that first cries of fear and then of rage, flocks of scapegoats, a choir of arch enemies, the outlawed, the out- numbered, the ones that know they are very […]

On February 17th and 18th, the street art duo known as Herakut will join forces with the incredible Lucent Dossier crew for a performance which will combine the talents of all the artists involved. Each of the performances will take place at the legendary Palace Theatre, which sits in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, and it will be filled with music, dancing, and circus-like performances. As part of the show, Lucent will use Herakut’s imagery and artwork as a starting point for the costumes, […]

Pow Wow ’12 – Setup

This year’s Pow Wow event aims to expand from its initial urban roots. Last year, the crew laid paint solely on buildings near the gallery property, but this time the surrounding industrial district of Kaka’ako was also the target of this artistic beautification campaign. After the kickoff ceremonies, it was time to get serious and the crew got straight to work. Artists such as Will Barras, Mr. Jago, Prime, Flying Fortress, 123Klan, Meggs, Angry Woebots, Aaron De La Cruz and many more took tours of the neighborhood to […]

Preview / Installation: ROA – “Defragmentation” & “Fragments” @ The Scarlett Gallery

The last time we touched on the work of the prolific Belgium-based ROA was when we came across some of his murals during Art Basel Week Miami (here & here). And, the last time we witnessed an indoor showing from the anatomically-inclined artist was in Australia (covered) back in October. Well, we’re happy to report that he has two concurrent exhibitions planned very soon in Stockholm, one on the 17th at a yet-to-be-announced secret location entitled Defragmentation and another entitled Fragments on the 18th at the […]
