Teaser: Brian Viveros – “Returning Art to the Unclean” @ Last Rites Gallery

When we we last visited Brian Viveros in his studio, he was hard at work getting ready for his The Dirtyland exhibition at Thinkspace. After that successful showing last October, the Riverside-based painter will be bringing his entire “Smoking Arm-Me” to New York for his next solo at the Last Rites Gallery in September. We’ll have more to follow but take a look at this teaser shot of his Night-Stalk-Her painting for now. Showcard after the jump…

Teaser: Andrew Hem – “Cold Water” @ LeBasse Projects

On July 16th, LeBasse Projects will be hosting a new body of work from Andrew Hem (interviewed) at their Culver City gallery entitled Cold Water. Themes of isolation and personal conflict will be the focus of the paintings as the viewer follows Andrew’s journey from “being surrounded by cold situations and places” until emerging from that situation and then heading back onto the road to happiness. Love it or hate it, Crazy 4 Cult was probably one of the shows that started the current trend of group shows inspired by the entertainment industry. Come July 8th, the fifth rendition of the exhibition based thematically on cult films will open it’s door to movie buffs and art collectors alike at the Gallery 1988 in Melrose. It’s been a year since we last saw a solo (covered) from Lisbon based street artist Pedro Matos. It looks like he has used the time in between shows wisely getting ready for an exhibition at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco in September. He’ll be continuing his portraiture of society’s downtrodden and neglected, but it looks like he has some new tricks up his sleeve as well judging from the preview image above. Since her series of shows in Australia at the end of 2010, Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) has been hard at work getting ready for her next show. Fans in Los Angeles will be happy to know that on July 30th, the new body of work will be revealed at Merry Karnowsky alongside two other artists – Deedee Cheriel and Femke Hiemstra. A young artist we have had our eye on for some time, Frank Gonzales, is getting ready for a solo in Santa Fe, New Mexico at Beals & Abbate Fine Art. The New York-based artist is currently working on the new body of work in preparation for the September including the piece seen above. We like his addition of fragmentation and abstract elements to his love for nature that gives classic imagery a refreshing new take. More detailed shots after the jump…
