Starting this week, artists have been hard at work painting murals for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii. Beautifying the streets of Kaka’ako in Oahu with their imagery, the participants get to enjoy the tropical weather and throngs of fans as they leave their mark at the annual event. Continuing their ongoing series of sleeping giants murals, art duo Ella & Pitr recently finished a massive new piece in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Depicting a little baby peacefully sleeping with his mother by its side, the mural was created with the help of locals that volunteered to help the project. Ella & Pitr were invited by Santurce Ley Festival to paint one of their famous giant works in the Caribbean. Following up on the new murals we shared with you last week from ROA & Nychos, which were painted for the BUKRUK Urban Arts Festival in Thailand, we now have images of Aryz’s contribution. For this latest piece, the Spanish artist chose for his inspiration something that can often be seen on the streets of Bangkok – the bicycle. On February 11th, the Joshua Liner Gallery in New York will open a solo exhibition by Michael Kagan. Entitled Lights Out, this new body of work by the Brooklyn-based painter focuses on man’s moments of triumph over nature’s limits. As the name of the exhibition indicates, the Kagan pushes the boundaries of his amped up compositions to include situations in which there are nearly no margin for errors. Taking inspiration from the Bangkok heat, the Austrian street artist painted a rubber ducky on meltdown, of course with the insides revealed with his usual aesthetic. Genalguacil is a small town in southern Spain which has been involved in supporting and organizing art projects for the last 20 years. Slowly turning the town into an open space museum, the locals recently invited Javier Calleja from nearby Malaga to add his contribution to the collection. Currently in Bangkok, the BUKRUK Urban Arts Festival has seen a steady stream of street artists arrive to leave their mark on the capital city. One of these is ROA, who is painting across the way from Aryz (more on his mural later), and with his usual practice, choosing to use local creatures as his inspiration.
