Releases: Mark Ryden – “Surrealist Plate”

Those who followed our coverage of Baby Tattooville last year probably remember one of the prized possessions attendees received during the event – a plate designed by Mark Ryden (interviewed). Featuring his iconic imagery, the “Surrealist Plate” was used during the special dinner prepared for the Surrealistic Ball (covered) he hosted with Marion Peck on the final night. Releases: Mark Ryden – “Lover’s Eye Brooch”

Continuing his longstanding collaboration with Porterhouse, Mark Ryden recently released the Lover’s Eye Brooch through their webstore. A similar item was given away at the Surrealist Ball during Baby Tattooville, with that prize being an original and this brooch being what looks to be an open edition. While attending this year’s Baby Tattooville, we heard the exciting news from Mark Ryden himself of his imminent return to the New York art scene with a new solo. Dodecahedron is scheduled to open on December 10th at Paul Kasmin Gallery (293 Tenth Avenue location), the site of the Los Angeles-based artist’s showing in NYC in 2010 (covered). Preview: Nathan Ota – “Pop! Goes the Weasel” @ La Luz de Jesus

While hanging out at this year’s Baby Tattooville, LA-based painter Nathan Ota told us about his upcoming show at La Luz de Jesus. Entitled Pop! Goes the Weasel, the new work incoporates much of the imagery that we have come expect from Ota – the birds, the tree man, the eggs, and now references to “COOZ”, an alias from his graffiti past. Openings: Camilla d’Errico & Brandi Milne – “The Candy Escape” @ Cotton Candy Machine

Last weekend, Camilla d’Errico (above) and Brandi Milne showcased new bodies of work at Brooklyn’s Cotton Candy Machine. Entitled The Candy Escape, this exhibition from both artists delighted New Yorkers and Comicon–goers alike. Camilla, who is back from a one year hiatus from fine art, took her unique mix of manga and illustrative techniques to a sold out return. While fresh off Baby Tattooville, the Los Angeles-based Milne displayed her somber and surreal paintings for Williamsburg art lovers to enjoy. Discuss this show here. Releases / Publications: Michael Hussar – “White: A Decade”

The long awaited first book from provocative oil painter Michael Hussar entitled White: A Decade is finally ready for release. The edition is published by Baby Tattoo Books, the same people behind the annual artist – fan retreat Baby Tattooville where Hussar has hosted the late night festivities dubbed Wunderland.
