Openings: Greg Simkins – “Inside the Outside” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

This past weekend, AM attended the opening of Greg “Craola” Simkins‘ (featured) newest show “Inside the Outside” at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery. Our anticipation has been building ever since we brought you a preview from Greg’s Los Angeles based studio. At that time, only part of this body of work was complete and apparently it was only the tip of the iceberg. Ever the diligent perfectionist, Greg works to push his technical skills a little bit further each time we see his work. As we […]

Openings: “Tiger Tiger Burning Bright” @ Roq La Rue

The “Tiger Tiger Burning Bright” group show opened last week in Seattle and AM friend / fellow Baby Tattooville alumni, Andrew Wong, sent us some pics of the festivities. As you saw in our preview, the Roq La Rue Gallery assembled a nice mix of artists for the show, which was inspired by William Blake’s poem “The Tiger”. Take a look at all the photos after the jump and get ready for a surprise from us next week in regards to this show that you […]

Interviews / Preview: Ana Bagayan – “Flutter” @ Mondo Bizzarro Gallery

Ana Bagayan should need no introduction to regular readers of AM, her stunning portraiture and contemporary figurative work being a regular feature here as her work continues to evolve with each and every new show. Entitled “Flutter”, Ana’s latest solo exhibition and her first body of work to be shown overseas, opens this weekend on Saturday 8th May at Rome’s Mondo Bizzaro Gallery. We caught up with Ana ahead of the opening. Read on for our interview and some further preview images after the jump.

Releases: Glenn Barr x Pressure Printing – “Evening” Print

Pressure Printing continues their line of stellar releases with this new print, “Evening”, from Glenn Barr (who has a show currently showing in Dallas). You may remember first seeing the original at the Riverside Art Museum in our Baby Tattooville coverage for 2008. The subtle brush strokes in Barr’s painting evoke a warmth and depth that definitely stood out to us that night and it seems that Pressure Printing has done a pretty good job replicating that in this release. The print (a 23″ x […]

Mars-1 x Oliver Vernon x Damon Soule Collaboration

What do you get when you put three artists together over Halloween weekend and let them all work on one painting together?  A pretty intense collaboration… Often times when artists work on the same canvas, what initially may have seemed like a good idea may not turn out as well as one would hope.  Discordant styles, varying familiarity with different mediums, and differing artistic visions can all be detrimental to the final result. We have witnessed much of the maneuvering and politics of this interaction […]

Preview: Audrey Kawasaki – “Hajimari – a prelude” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Sometimes the more you see the more you want. After spending the weekend with Audrey Kawasaki at Baby Tattooville (here), we were eagerly awaiting the opening of “Hajimari – a prelude” at Jonathan Levine Gallery this Saturday. Well, Audrey just released some stunning in-process pictures of her latest batch of hypnotic beauties. It’s just a taste of what we expect will be a great show. Word of caution as this show not only looks fantastic, but also very addicting… Check out the preview images after […]

Openings: Greg “Craola” Simkins – “The Pearl Thief” @ Gallery 1988 (LA)

Last night, Greg Simkins aka Craola (interviewed) opened his show “The Pearl Thief” at the LA location of Gallery 1988.  Featuring his largest painting to date (glimpses of which you saw in our studio visit) and a riddle/puzzle that lead to a prize of an original painting from Greg, show-goers left with plenty to talk about. “The Pearl Thief” painting (seen above), was pretty amazing. One of the most detailed paintings we have ever seen; it was like ten paintings in one with many of […]
