Dr. Sketchy Anti-Art School with Ron English

On Valentine’s Day, Molly Crabapple invited AM to participate in a “life drawing” event called Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School. The guest artist for this session was our friend Ron English. Our first thought was… “There’s going to be a bunch of hardcore artist types sitting with their easels circling a ‘neck-ed’ model. Well, we were wrong…” Dr. Sketchy was anything but… So being the “Anti-Art” school, they hosted the event at a burlesque bar crowded with beautiful people excited to socialize and channel their inner artist. The subject was Ron English’s famous “Cow […]

Preview: Bob Dob @ Billy Shire

Baby Tattooville alumni Bob Dob is opening what looks to be a surf culture themed show, not surpising as he grew up in Hermosa Beach.  The show opens Valentine’s Day at Billy Shire Fine Arts with a body of work featuring his familiar characters, birds, waves and of course, the ubiquitous and mischevious little devil – Luey.  Take a look at some paintings from the show after the jump.

Preview: Movers & Shakers @ POVevolving

Our friend, fellow Baby Tattooville attendee, and collector extraordinaire, Gino Joukar, has send us some preview pics for “Movers & Shakers,” a group show that will be his first as a curator.  The list of artists participating is impressive, no doubt all who have found themselves part of Gino’s vast personal collection at some point.  Artists include Amy Sol (seen above), Ana Bagayan, Anthony Ausgang, Brandi Milne, Brian Despain, Damon Soule, Dave Cooper, David Horvath, Doktor A, Ekundayo, Eric Fortune, Eric Joyner, Eric White, Jeff […]

Amanda Visell / Bone Marrow Drive

Baby Tattooville alum Amanda Visell is organizing a bone marrow drive for one of her close friends who has had a relapse with his leukemia. None of his family members are a match and he desperately needs a bone marrow transplant to survive. Not that this should be the reason why you would get tested to see if you are a match, but she is willing to send you an original drawing if you do go through with it. Check all the details after the […]

Dave Cooper x Danko Jones

Danko Jones – King Of Magazines from Bad Taste Records on Vimeo. Baby Tattooville alum Dave Cooper and animator Nick Cross recently teamed with Canadian rock band Danko Jones to produce a music video for their song “King of Magazines.” Oddly, this is exactly the sort of video you would expect if classic Cooper characters were animated – a bouncy lush world filled with his voluptuous and lascivious women strangely pulsating to the beat. Make sure you check out this interview by Hi-Fructose about the […]

Second Helpings of AM for Thanksgiving

It has been a wonderful few months for us since AM launched in September, so we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving and thank our readers for your continued support. We’ve covered so much great art in our first few months, we thought that it might be a good time to recap some of our favorite stories so far. From Audrey Kawasaki to Kaws, Shepard Fairey to Baby Tattooville, Mark Ryden to Josh Keyes, Takashi Murakami to Greg Simkins, […]

Preview/Interviews: Travis Louie @ FUSE Gallery

Travis Louie has been hard at work with two shows opening this month – the first being at Merry Karnowsky Berlin (previewed) and the second being at the FUSE Gallery in New York. Fortunately, he still had some time to sit down and answer some questions for us and send us some preview pics for his “Strange Neighbors” show opening on November 29th at FUSE gallery. Check after the jump for the images as well as our interview where he talks about future collaborations, the […]

ANRA Scholarship: Children’s art contest

Its tough being an up and coming artist in the world today! Its an uphill battle for most artists trying to get your work recognized and accepted at galleries. So its truly unique to see a young artist take time to go above and beyond the call of duty… Since AM last saw Ana Bagayan at Baby Tattooville, she has been busy getting ready for her upcoming show with Billy Shire and recently announced a show with Dorothy Circus in Italy. Yet with a such a heavy […]

Preview/Interviews: Shag @ Jonathan Levine

Shag is at it again… this time he’s living it up in the Big Apple. Fresh from his recent Baby Tattooville retreat where AM met him, JoSH AGle (aka: SHAG) has a hip new show at Jonathan Levine. (Nov 22nd – Dec 20th) This time, Shag is giving us an official “peep” at the elegant beauties and chic lifestyles for the aptly named theme: Voyeur. This is sort of an introspective show for Shag, for he was once a Voyeur; which led the way for […]

Sketch for Change

No matter what your political leanings are, you must still admit these “Sketch for Change” pieces are pretty rad. These auctions are ending one by one as we speak, but don’t worry … they are putting up more for auction everyday. We like the way each artist has incorporated political logos and iconic imagery into each of their pieces. Seem as though collectors agree as the auctions seem to be ending with some astronomical prices for simple sketches (perhaps politically motivated bids as well). More […]
