Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Sloan Fine Art x Chris Berens

Chris Berens fans attending Art Basel are in for a treat his year as Sloan Fine Art will feature several pieces from him in their booth at SCOPE as a preview to his big New York show opening at their gallery on December 16th. Berens’ soft focus and imaginative work is a result of a unique and time-consuming process and are often homages to the Dutch master painters of yore. We have become increasingly enamored with his work after recent shows in Seattle and Amsterdam […]

Releases: Charles Saatchi – “My Name Is…” Book

Phaidon Press recently released this intriguing title by world renowned art dealer, collector and ad man Charles Saatchi. Known for his reclusive nature, Saatchi has apparently stepped into the spotlight to answer 200 questions from journalists, art critics and members of the public, all with unabashed honesty. An excerpt of ten question after the jump.

Openings: Kris Kuksi – “Beast Anthology” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

On Saturday night, AM was on hand to experience the surreal sculptures of Kris Kuksi as Joshua Liner Gallery hosted the opening of his latest show the “Beast Anthology.” As seen in our preview of the show, the show looked like a literal monster, but nothing prepared us for seeing the work in person. The physical intricacies of his craftsmanship coupled with the fantastical stories unfolding in every piece held the packed house in a unique trance that we’ve rarely experienced from an art show in New York. […]

Studio Visits / Preview: Tristram Lansdowne @ LE Gallery, Toronto

AM got hooked on Tristram Lansdowne’s urban landscape paintings when we saw his work featured earlier this year at Joshua Liner Gallery’s summer group show (covered), so we tried to find out as much as we could about this exciting young artist. Lansdowne has a solo show entitled “Entropical Paradise” opening on 27th November at Toronto’s LE Gallery. Judging from the work we’ve seen in progress here, this show looks like one to catch if you can. Based in Toronto, Tristram’s watercoloured architectural representations depict […]

Off The Roll Tape Sculpture Contest

AM has long admired the work of Mark Jenkins, and in particular, his tape sculptures.  Apparently 3M (maker of Scotch brand tape) has also taken notice and will hold a contest to see who can come up with the most creative use of the popular adhesive with a $5000 cash prize no less.  Submissions will be judged by a panel of artists including Jenkins.  The deadline is February 28, 2010 so time to get tapin’ (tutorial). Other examples of Jenkins’ work after the jump as well […]

Openings: Alex Lukas – “The Eventuality of Daybreak” @ Glowlab

We recently stopped by Glowlab in NYC to check out “The Eventuality of Daybreak,” the new body of work from Alex Lukas. The solo exhibition from the Philly-based artist revealed a batch of works that highlighted desolate apocalyptic landscapes of major cities which depict a possible near future where these metropolises are literally submerged through coastal flooding. Alex works with various techniques including acrylic, ink, silkscreen, gouache to get his images and points across. The work was not only intricately put together, but also reasonably priced. If you’re […]

Streets: Poster Boy x The Decapitator

Things have been pretty quiet for Poster Boy since his show with the Neo-Con Collective at the Carmichael Gallery in April (covered). But, a couple new pieces have shown up in New York where he teamed up with the Decapitator to “modify” a some phonebooth ads. Another example of how they feel about advertising after the jump.

Openings: Deth P. Sun – “Please Be Brave” @ Giant Robot 2

Last weekend, Deth P. Sun (fresh off his Giant Robot Biennale exhibition), opened “Please Be Brave,” a new body of work at Giant Robot 2 on Sawtelle Street. The centerpiece of the show was this fantastic assemblage (above) made up of individual 5″ x 5″ paintings. Not only does this make each piece affordable but also allows a collector to put together their own combination at home from selected pieces. More images after the jump…

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Scope x New Image Art x Judith Supine

Art Basel Miami is just around the corner and AM is excited to be providing on-site coverage of the biggest stateside art fair of the year (just like we did last year). In the next couple weeks, you’ll see more previews leading up to Basel, but we will start things off with telling you about New Image Art and their focus on Judith Supine this year. They will be bringing multiple pieces from the collage master to SCOPE (one of the satellite fairs), and we can’t wait […]

Video: Baby Tattooville ’09 – Art Jam

The unifying force to each and every Baby Tattooville “Secret Society” gathering is the collaborative art jam painting.  All artists who participate at the event put their brushes to the panel, but unlike the solitude they work with at their respective studios, they are able to feed off each other’s creativity, build upon their peers’ foundations, and revel in the camaraderie.  Unique styles are complemented, morphed, or transformed upon by others. Fortunately for all those who were unable to witness the group painting in person […]
