Preview: Sea No Evil Charity Art Show 2009

The Sea No Evil Charity Art Show is again in full swing. This year’s show is bigger than ever with a large group of artist donating their works to benefit the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Participating artists include: Anthony Lister (interviewed), Greg Craola Simkins (interviewed), Dave Cooper, Dave Kinsey, Glen E. Friedman, Gregory Euclide, Jeff Soto (interviewed), Mars-1, Munk One, Renta, Shepard Fairey, and Tim Biskup just to name a few. The charity was founded by Captain Paul Watson, who many may have seen on […]

Jeff Koons’ Diamond Lights Up Manhattan Skyline

What would you do if you had the money to get one of Jeff Koons’ famous “Diamond” sculptures? Where would you place it to get the most out of your new found bling? On the roof of your luxury penthouse? Apparently that’s exactly what hedge-fund mogul Richard Perry did. After buying the sculpture for 2.3 million dollars in 2005, he installed his flashy green diamond on the roof using a crane in 2007. That’s when the complaints started coming in. The 5ft tall (size of a buffalo) stainless steel metallic […]

Streets: Judith Supine x Williamsburg Bridge

A proper street artist requires good concepts, placement skills, and cojones (or the female equivalent). Judith Supine once again proves a master of all three especially in the latter set. Check out this mind-bending piece that Supine placed on top of the Willamsburg Bridge! More pics after the jump…

Art Focus: David MacDowell – “Appetite For Veruca”

After witnessing David MacDowell’s wit and humor as well his acrylic skills firsthand at Thinkspace a short while back, we fast became fans of his work. But, his ballsy take on Robert Williams‘ classic “Appetite For Destruction” at the Crazy4Cult 3D show really blew our mind. Notice the seamless blending of the world of Willy Wonka with arguably one of the most famous paintings of lowbrow art culture. See Williams’ original painting after the jump as well as hear in MacDowell’s own words how he […]

Openings: Travis Louie – “Portrait Of A Young Monster”

Last Friday, Travis Louie’s (interviewed) opened his show “Portrait Of A Young Monster” at Roq La Rue.  There were a total of eight paintings with the largest being “The Ghost Of Abigail” at 31″ x 19″ (above). So what is behind his paintings of “monsters” and misfits on the outskirts of normalcy? We think a particularly insightful answer to this question posed by our friend Commandax to Travis describes perfectly what his work is about: “Mistaken identity… being judged solely on one’s appearance… racism. The characters […]

FAME Festival – Word to Mother

UK’s Word to Mother (interviewed) has just finished a lovely mural at FAME Festival (our coverage here). Word’s soft colors and sketched lines fit really well into the environment the artists have been working in. This piece forms a nice continuation to his solo exhibition, “Young Mind, Old Soul,” at Fifty24SF (covered) earlier in the year. See a more detailed shot of the figure to the right after the jump.

Teaser: David Stoupakis – “Red” @ Dorothy Circus Gallery

Some images from David Stoupakis have leaked of him getting ready for his upcoming show at Dorothy Circus Gallery in Rome. Stoupakis will be bringing a new body of work with his special blend of gothic surrealism to Italy at the end of October. Perhaps his muse Aprella will be making an appearance as well like she did at the Dr. Sketchy Tribute Event to Stoupakis in May. Some more in progress shots as well as a quick look around the studio after the jump…

Photography: Simon Menner & James Reynolds

AM recently came across two series of photographs that we thought would go well together, both of which reference issues of “Crime & Punishment.”  The first photographer is Simon Menner and his series entitled simply “Murder Weapons.”  He was interested in how some of these ordinary items along with the requisite guns and knives changed as soon as the viewer realized they were used to kill.  There were some unexpected weapons as well like from this “caveman” murderer. The second set of photos is from […]

Openings: “A Mirror Distorted” @ Carmichael Gallery

Opening alongside Guy Denning’s “Celebrity Will Eat Itself” show at the Carmichael Gallery is “A Mirror Distorted” (previewed) featuring work from four unique female voices. South African transplant Candice Tripp (interviewed) continues to impress us with her wit and great use of white space, while Pam Glew displays her unique “flag” works which were created utilizing a special bleach and ink technique. Cherri Wood focuses solely on canvas works for this show, continuing to express her thoughts on isolation and idiosyncrasies through her characters. Rounding out the pack is […]

Streets: Imminent Disaster

We saw this image of an Imminent Disaster piece in progress today on Vandalog and were struck again by the complexity of her work and paper cutting skills. We first saw the intricacy of her work in person at the “Streets of Brooklyn” show in January and more recently at her dual show with Gaia at Ad Hoc Art, but nothing quite highlights the ephemerality of street art like seeing her delicate and time-consuming cutouts pasted on a decaying wall. Looking forward to her two-person […]
