Shepard Fairey and the Associated Press Settle Their Lawsuit

In an apparent win for appropriation and fair use, Shepard Fairey’s copyright infringement lawsuit with the Associated Press has ended not with a bang but with a whimper. With neither Fairey backing down from his stance that his use of the AP photograph for the now iconic Obama Hope campaign poster constituted fair use, nor the AP surrendering their views that Fairey misappropriated the image without proper licensing, the much ballyhooed legal proceedings have grinded to a halt in a stalemate of sorts. Of course, […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Shepard Fairey – “Mandala Ornament”

Art Basel Week in Miami may have a lot of action indoors at the fairs, but that’s not the only place you will find the arts. As you can see with Wynwood Walls and along the streets of Miami, in recent years we have seen artists make contributions on the outdoors too. We took a break from the fair circuit during the week to meet up with friend Shepard Fairey to catch him working on this gorgeous Mandala Ornament mural on the side of a […]

Releases: “MAYDAY: The Art of Shepard Fairey” Book

Following in a long line of elegantly produced Shepard Fairey exhibition catalogs, a new publication has just been unveiled to honor his historic creative outpouring that kicked off this past summer’s art season. While landmark in it’s own right as a result of the scope and scale of the effort, the instantly iconic show also served as an emphatic going out party for Deitch Projects, the game-changing gallery in a large part responsible for taking street art out of the shadows and into the limelight. […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Friends With You x Pharrell x Shepard Fairey x Paper Mag Party

Running at full steam right now down in South Beach, Art Basel Week is filled with many good things. This was most definitely one of them. Set upon the backdrop of Friends With You’s psychedelic outdoor installation, Rainbow City (previewed), Pharrell came to the conclusion the inflatable garden was the perfect location for a set of his hip-hop infused pop anthems. A brilliant idea, indeed, for the ubiquitous recording artist who has befriended countless contemporary artists and recently called upon the colorful Miami based art […]

Streets: SABER and Shepard Fairey Flags Collaboration

On LA’s famous Melrose Ave, near Fairfax Ave lies a collaboration by two of the city’s most pioneering street and graffiti artists. On a wall that previously held a Shepard Fairey mural now features two flags side-by-side, one an American flag as interpreted by Fairey and the other, an American flag as seen through the eyes of SABER. Street pieces do not get better than this. These two local heroes have provided the streets of Los Angeles and the rest of the world with innovative, […]
