Openings: Tomoo Gokita – “On Paper” @ Bill Brady Gallery / Johnson Trading Gallery

On March 4th, Johnson Trading Gallery in NYC hosted a Bill Brady event – a pop up show by Tomoo Gokita. Coinciding with Armory Week, the show titled On Paper includes smaller works on paper by the renowned Japanese artist. The 12 pieces in the show are all figurative black and white pieces based on vintage portrait images, similar to the ones he presented with the gallery in Miami last December (covered). Using exclusively monochrome colors, Gokita’s works have a strong vintage feel which is further emphasized by the traditional […]

Streets: Phlegm (New Zealand) – Part I

Recently in Dunedin, New Zealand, the ever busy Phlegm finished a new mural on the side of a structure featuring some of his signature characters riding a Giant Moa. The striking image features the long extinct flightless bird endemic to the area that could grow to 12 feet tall and weighed about 500 lbs. Of course, when magnified by the Sheffield-based artist, it looks even more impressive. Take a look at more detailed photos below… Photo credit: StreetKiwi (via StreetArtNews). Discuss Phlegm here.

Upcoming / Videos: Victor Castillo – “Born in ’73” @ KP Projects // MKG

Tomorrow night (March 5th) at KP Projects // MKG, Victor Castillo will be opening his fourth showing with the West Hollywood gallery. Born in ’73 is a self-reflective new body of work according to the locally-based artist – he was born about the same time the military dictatorship was established in Chile in 1973. The feelings of fear from the brutal political system can often be seen in the undertones of his paintings that on the surface feature children happily playing. Included in the exhibition will be eight new […]

Previews: Reginald Sylvester II – “Reaching For Heaven” @ Pace Prints

Tonight, Pace Prints will be unveiling a new body of work by artist Reginald Sylvester II. Entitled Reaching for Heaven, this series calls on his talent of using oil sticks & acrylic paint to create densely packed abstractions. Through bold colors, black outlines and child-like scribbles, Sylvester builds his visual vocabulary and with it, creates compositions that invoke the perpetual stimulation of today’s digital life style. This exhibition approaches the idea of humanity in an age where identity is synonymous with the selfie.

POW! WOW! Hawaii ’16 / Streets: Slinkachu

After a look (here & here) at most of the murals painted for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii, we now focus in on some of the work for the event that you may have missed. Created on a miniature level by Slinkachu, the tiny sculptures were scattered and hidden in plain site around Oahu, including underneath some of the muralists, leading to some interesting collaborations. Take a look at more of the pieces created by the UK-based street artist especially for Hawaii in the photos below […]

Previews: Sean Norvet – “New Works” @ CG2 Gallery

CG2 gallery in Nashville is opening a two man solo show on the 5th of March, showing new works by Sean Norvet & Jason Lascu. The show will feature a series of new paintings by LA-based Norvet and sculptures by the locally-based Lascu. Norvet’s work has been getting a lot of attention lately because of the unique mix of styles and imagery used. Constructed using cartoon elements, pop culture logos and symbols or random every day objects, and often wrapped in classic portrait form, his paintings […]

Previews: Anthony Lister – “Run Away Ouiji” @ Blackartprojects

On March 5th, Blackartprojects in Melbourne will be presenting new work from Anthony Lister (filmed) in a show entitled Run Away Ouiji. The Australian street artist, who recently made the news after being found guilty of wilful damage by graffiti in Brisbane, was apparently still able to find time to create a fresh series of paintings despite his legal troubles. He states something about the new exhibition  – “Ouiji boards and clowns have always freaked me out. Maybe it’s because I am in control of them these […]

Previews: Erin M. Riley & Lucien Shapiro – “ANEW” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

On March 3rd, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco will be opening a two person show entitled ANEW from Erin M. Riley (interviewed) and Lucien Shapiro. Although the pairing seems odd at first – when you delve a little deeper, you will see that both artists create personally meaningful work though unconventional methods. The Brooklyn-based Riley takes traditional hand-woven tapestries in a unique direction by choosing subjects that are considered taboo, which are often associated with womanhood. She further states – “There is so much about being a […]
