Openings: “SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot” @ Oakland Museum of California

Last weekend, the Oakland Museum of California opened a new exhibition, entitled SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the art and culture magazine Giant Robot. Along with a diverse selection of GR branded paraphenalia and publications, artists who have been involved with them over the years contributed original artwork as well as some wall murals. Jose Parla – “Signature Roots” @ Portland Art Museum / Wieden+Kennedy

José Parlá, who recently finished a mural at the James B. Hunt Library at North Carolina State University, continues his work with institutes of higher learning with a new project in Porland. Working with students from Caldera Arts who participated in a painting and writing workshop the Brooklyn-based artist put on at the Portland Art Museum, a new large scale installation (8 feet tall by 70 feet) was created entitled Signature Roots. POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: James Jean

James Jean was one of the secret surprises of this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii festival in Honolulu. The American artist was invited to the event as a guest first, but once he arrived to the island, he decided to try out his skills in creating a large scale mural for the first time in his career. Update: James Jean

James Jean (interviewed) recently shared the first painting for 2014 that he has been working on. Fans of the talented artist have probably noticed that he has been on a sabbatical recently and anxiously await his return to the gallery scene – hopefully this will be the year. In the meantime, 2013 saw the release of his iBook, the revival of his Instagram, a new tumblr site showcasing new and old works.  Discuss James Jean here.

Basel Week Miami ’13: Martha Otero @ PULSE

Showing: Todd James – “Splash Damage” @ Cooper Cole Gallery

Earlier this month, Todd “REAS” James opened a showing in Toronto at the Cooper Cole Gallery entitled Splash Damage. Included in the work on display are his familiar pirate paintings as well as some loose still lifes of women and their cats rendered in the American artist’s cartoonish style. for those in town, the exhibition runs through December 7th so stop by for a look yourself. Upcoming: Todd “REAS” James – “Swords & Sorcery” @ The Newsstand

Tomorrow (November 23, 3-9pm) in New York, Todd James will be releasing a zine at The Newsstand in Brooklyn (inside the Metropolitan Ave.-Lorimer St. stop on the G and L trains). Those attending the event will see a Sword & Sorcery themed installation based on the dungeons and dragons type pieces he has been posting onto his Instagram (some more of which are seen below) recently.
