Frieze Week NYC ’13: Frieze Art Fair – First Look

Frieze returned to New York City this weekend, and again put on an top-notch art fair that challenges the dominance of The Armory Show. Like last year, the event was held on scenic Randall’s Island and featured many of the world’s most respected galleries and artists. We visited the fair multiple times over the weekend, and will post about specific booths that caught our eye. But first, here’s a general overview of some of what we enjoyed from Frieze NYC 2013.

Streets: Momo (Jamaica)

The geometrically-inclined Momo has spent the last several weeks working in Jamaica on various mural projects. He certainly looked like he was having a good time along with partner in crime Angelo (Fame Festival), and their stay there was quite productive also judging from various large to medium-sized walls that were painted on the streets as well as indoors. Take a look at more of the work below… Photo credit: Fame Festival. Discuss Momo here.

Showing: Shinique Smith – “Bold As Love”@ James Cohan

One of the best gallery shows we’ve seen lately is the current exhibition at James Cohan by Shinique Smith, entitled Bold As Love. Smith, who is known for her mixed medium sculptures and paintings, draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources, ranging from abstract expressionism to graffiti to Eastern religious mandalas. We were lucky enough to be at the gallery when Smith was discussing her show with a curator from Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, where she will have a solo exhibition in 2014. […]

As the followup exhibition to a highly successful and popular solo presentation by Jen Stark, Martha Otero presents a group show featuring artists from its solid roster, as well as some additional guests. Named after the Roman writer, architect, engineer, and soldier, Vitruvius includes work by Jonathan Brand, Gregory Euclide, Jacob Hashimoto, James Jean, Saelee Oh, Alexander Tarrant, and Eric White. Vitruvius was a esteemed and revered renaissance man who kept to the spirit of the past, but with a innovative and creative drive that […]

Tomorrow night (January 17th), the National Arts Club in New York will be opening their Nocturnes: Romancing the Night group exhibition. The genre “nocturne painting” is attributed to James Abbott McNeill Whistler who used the term to describe paintings that depicted night scenes or subjects blurred in a veil of twilight. For this show, the NAC has brought together a group of mid-career and emerging artists like Odd Nerdrum, Steven Assael, Marshall Arisman, Bo Bartlett, Jefferson Haman, Alexandra Pacula, Richard Scott Young, Alexander Roloff, Martin Wittfooth (below), and Jason Yarmosky (above) – who […]

Streets: James “DALEK” Marshall (Corona Del Mar)

Continuing to produce public displays of his geometric mastery, James Marshall aka Dalek (interviewed) recently painted another mural at the Hobie Surf Shop in Corona Del Mar. Orange County is kind of ground zero for fans of the American artist’s work because of his affiliation with Hurley – leading to many shows, product lines, and associated events in and around Hurley Space. Check out some more shots below… Photo credit: James Ng for Arrested Motion. Discuss DALEK here.
