Baby Tattooville ’15: Art Jam

Every year at Baby Tattooville, one of the most intriguing and fun events is the continuously ongoing “Art Jam.” For 2015, participating artists Anthony Ausgang, Sas Christian, Olivia De Berardinis, Ron English, Camille Rose Garcia, Bosko Hrnjak, Marion Peck, KRK Ryden, Mark Ryden, and Isabel Samaras decided to go with a black, white, and gray palette to create a surreal collaborative masterpiece. This will then be reproduced as a print overnight by Prints On Wood so that attendees can take a copy home with them. Discuss this year’s Baby Tattooville here.

Baby Tattooville ’14: Art Jam!

Bringing together 14 accomplished and sought after artists in the lowbrow art world is not easily done, and a feat worth noting all on its own. But having those artists collaborate on a single piece of art, creating it in a day and a half, then have prints signed and distributed all within a weekend is nothing short of miraculous. AM was on hand to catch the entire process, from the blank canvas to the last ten minutes when the piece was laid flat to allow […]

Baby Tattooville ’12: Art Jam

The Art Jam is the centerpiece of Baby Tattooville (see 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008). As in the previous five years, artists in attendance collaborate on the large piece from the start of the BT weekend on Friday until the Saturday night deadline. Prints are then made of this completed painting and distributed to attendees after the weekend. As you can tell from the photo of the finished Art Jam piece, this year’s painting was a more conservatively sized piece compared to last year’s 5th anniversary […]

Baby Tattooville ’11: Art Jam (Final)

As veterans of the annual Baby Tattooville art retreat know, how the final Art Jam collaborative painting ends up looking is nothing like how it starts. This year was no different as the 30 artists in attendance put their mark on the extra large canvas to accommodate the reunion year. The final composition was surprisingly pretty balanced despite the inevitable drama that develops in the process, perhaps in no small part due to the leadership skills of Captain Jeff Soto (interviewed). More photos after the jump […]

Baby Tattooville ’11: Art Jam Begins

Baby Tattooville’s Art Jam is easily the most recognized event of this special weekend and has existed since Baby Tattooville’s very first year (see 2010, 2009, 2008). As always, artists in attendance are given the freedom to contribute to the large collaboration piece at anytime during the weekend up until the deadline on Saturday night. Upon completion of the painting Saturday night, the work is used to produce prints overnight that attendees will receive Sunday morning. See photos by Carlos Gonzalez of the early stages […]

Baby Tattooville ’10 – Art Jam

Baby Tattooville’s Art Jam is the artist activity that has received the most attention at each BT weekend. This is not without great reason as this annual fixture involves every individual artist at BT. During Art Jam, all of the featured and returning artists are welcomed to join together in creating a once-in-a-lifetime collaborative piece. This historic painting is started on opening day and is jointly worked on until the following night. BT guests are free to witness every moment of the piece’s completion. A […]

Video: Baby Tattooville ’09 – Art Jam

The unifying force to each and every Baby Tattooville “Secret Society” gathering is the collaborative art jam painting.  All artists who participate at the event put their brushes to the panel, but unlike the solitude they work with at their respective studios, they are able to feed off each other’s creativity, build upon their peers’ foundations, and revel in the camaraderie.  Unique styles are complemented, morphed, or transformed upon by others. Fortunately for all those who were unable to witness the group painting in person […]

Baby Tattooville ’09: Art Jam

If the artists at Baby Tattooville are the heart of the event, then the “Art Jam” is definitely the bloodline that is pumping throughout the event. Starting at 5pm on the opening day and lasting a little past 8pm the next night, “Art Jam” is a culmination of the all the participating artist’s hard work. Like in previous years, the blank canvas was tinkered with by a few brave artists during the initial dinner, but by the time midnight rolled around, one could clearly see […]

Baby Tattooville: Art Jam

During the first day at Jeff Soto’s studio, the artists kicked off the ART JAM. What is this “Art Jam” we speak of? Imagine a large blank canvas that Baby Tattooville artists will feverishly work on over the course of 26 hours with each artist improvising and implementing their unique style around the clock to create a collaborative painting. With so many proverbial “chefs in the kitchen,” this could either be an artistic nightmare or masterpiece. With over 15 artists working on one canvas, it […]

Upcoming: James Jean – “Eternal Journey” @ LOTTE Museum of Art (Seoul)

Last weekend, James Jean (interviewed) previewed a new stained glass work he has created in collaboration with Judson Studios. The large sculptural work is a followup to the pieces that were created for his exhibition in Tokyo last year (covered), and will be on display when the American artist’s solo Eternal Journey opens at the LOTTE Museum of Art in Seoul on April 4th. Take a look at some more photos of Gaia down below… Photo credit: Khoi Nguyen. Discuss James Jean here.
