Streets: Ella & Pitr (Puerto Rico)

Continuing their ongoing series of sleeping giants murals, art duo Ella & Pitr recently finished a massive new piece in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Depicting a little baby peacefully sleeping with his mother by its side, the mural was created with the help of locals that volunteered to help the project. Ella & Pitr were invited by Santurce Ley Festival to paint one of their famous giant works in the Caribbean. With this series, the French artists turn rooftops, parking lots, and other large areas into cramped sleeping […]

Streets: Aryz (Bangkok)

Following up on the new murals we shared with you last week from ROA & Nychos, which were painted for the BUKRUK Urban Arts Festival in Thailand, we now have images of Aryz’s contribution. For this latest piece, the Spanish artist chose for his inspiration something that can often be seen on the streets of Bangkok – the bicycle. Take a look at more detailed and progress shots below… Photo credit: A-line Photography & the artist. Discuss Aryz here.

Upcoming: 2nd Annual “Ema Show” @ Hatos Bar (Tokyo)

Starting on February 13th, a show organized by Hellion Gallery will be showing in Tokyo at the Hatos Bar. It’s appropriate that the 2nd annual Ema Show will start in Japan as the concept was to have artists paint the small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshipers write their prayers or wishes. Each participant was given three of the Ema plaques, so there will be two more left for future shows at Hellion’s Portland space (April  7th) and Galerie Artistik Rezo in Paris (June 21st). The […]

POW! WOW! Hawaii ’16 / Showing: “Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

Over the weekend, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked off the festivities with a show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement, something they have done for the last two years before this (see 2015 & 2014). As in the past, artists were asked to contribute works that conform to a certain format, leading to a visually congruent and display of artworks. In addition, an installation from Aaron Li-Hill (interviewed) could be seen on one wall, documenting the first major American military presence in Hawaii.   Other participating artists this year include: 1010, […]

Openings: Nick Walker @ The Quin Hotel

AM recently attended the opening of Nick Walker’s (interviewed) exhibition at the Quin Hotel in Midtown New York City. Marking the kick off of the first ever artist in residence for the hotel, the famed UK artist pulled out some great stencil compositions to deck out his paintings. We noticed a few NYC specific artworks and of course a few works featuring Walker’s iconic Vandal character. Curated by the Quin’s DK Johnston, a diverse selection of mediums such as canvas, paper and editions were all on display […]

Studio Visits: Michael Kagan – “Lights Out” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

On February 11th, the Joshua Liner Gallery in New York will open a solo exhibition by Michael Kagan. Entitled Lights Out, this new body of work by the Brooklyn-based painter focuses on man’s moments of triumph over nature’s limits. As the name of the exhibition indicates, the Kagan pushes the boundaries of his amped up compositions to include situations in which there are nearly no margin for errors. One mistake/miscalculations would mean a literal end to the participant’s life. Expanding on his awe inspiring first show with the gallery (covered), Kagan […]

Recap: Alex Katz – “Portraits” @ Galeria Javier Lopez

On February 5th, Galería Javier López in Madrid officially closed their exhibition by the New York artist Alex Katz. Portraits included a selection of works which brought the artist wide recognition, including some of his most recent pieces, both oil on canvas and studies on board. Katz’ unique style that distinguishes him from his contemporaries was the result of the influence of photography, cinema, television and advertising of the sixties. Using a large canvas format as a movie screen and trying to re-create similar aesthetics, his work has always been […]
