Preview: D*Face + Obey @ Magda Danysz

This weekend, two of street art’s best, Shepard Fairey and D*Face, invade La Ville-Lumiere (that’s Paris) for a show at the lovely Galerie Magda Danysz. Looks like Mr. Obey will be showing mostly larger HPMs and album covers, giving European collectors a crack at some images from his recent, instantly sold-out San Fran show; D*Face will show some mixed media works and prints. If you are in Paris, check out the vernissage on Saturday, or peruse the show at your leisure sometime before October 25. […]

Streets: Unmute Gaza

Emerging as a creative response in support of Palestinian photojournalists, Unmute Gaza has brought together an array of artists highlighting the unimaginable suffering currently being experienced by the people of Gaza. The project features interpretations of photographs captured on the ground in the exclave which can be easily downloaded and pasted up around the world; so far interventions have been seen across 83 cities in 30 different countries. These images both make visible the suffering which is all too absent from much of the media’s […]

Showing: Beyond The Streets (London)

The art establishment has a less than distinguished history when it comes to embracing artists who fall outside of its comfortably familiar linear narrative of western art. Impressionism was a derogatory name bestowed by the art critic Louis Leroy and the fabled Salon des Refusés exhibition of work by the movement’s most prominent figures was comprised of pieces rejected by the the Académie des Beaux-Arts’s annual exhibition in Paris. With stylewriting – or graffiti, as its early detractors called it – history has repeated itself […]

Kickstarter: Swoon – “The Sanctuary”

Swoon and Za’Kiyah House are in the process of rebuilding a former church in North Braddock to create a space and facilities for people to rebuild their lives. The building dates back to 1854 when it was the First United Brethren Church; regular services were held for 150 years and, during this time, West Pennsylvania thrived as part of the US’ industrial backbone. But as jobs ebbed away, so did the town’s lifeblood and a year after the church closed for good, a fire torn […]

Streets: Invader (Paris)

Recently in Paris, Invader revealed the largest version of his infamous space invader ever made at Place Stravinsky, just by the Centre Pompidou. Installed on the side of a building that also features the work of Shepard Fairey and Jef Aerosol, this piece from the French artist is his most ambitious mosaic to date. Take look at more photos of the work below… Photo credit: @otaku_san and the artist. Discuss Invader here.

Showing: Beyond The Streets (NYC)

After an inaugural showing last year in Los Angeles (covered), it was only a matter of time before the BEYOND THE STREETS  hit what many consider one of the birth places of graffiti in the US. New York’s version of the exhibition (curated by Roger Gastman) celebrating graffiti, street art, and beyond once again featured a stunning roster of some of the most well known and seminal artists in the genre. Ranging from paintings, sculptures, photography, mural art to site-specific installations from 100+ artists, posting all the photos […]

Previews: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles)

On May 6th, BEYOND THE STREETS will open its doors in Los Angeles (1667 N Main St), an immersive survey of graffiti and street art, the likes of which haven’t been seen since Art in the Streets (covered) in 2011. This is not surprisingly seeing as Roger Gastman was an associate curator of that show back then at the MOCA, and will be the main curator of this new exhibition. Working with a roster of over 100+ artists, 40,000+ sq. ft. of industrial indoor and outdoor space has been converted […]
