Studio Visits: Alfred Steiner – “Likelihood of Confusion” @ Joshua Liner

Set to open his first solo exhibition tomorrow with Joshua Liner Gallery, Alfred Steiner welcomed us into his laboratory in Chelsea. The American artist has long been on our radar with his amazingly realistic watercolors and creative approach to assembling iconic symbols & images based on the long standing Freudian technique of free association. On every piece he creates, the viewer will likely find something memorable and thought provoking. Entitled Likelihood of Confusion, this new body of work will not only include his signature watercolors, but also two oil fiberboards that […]

Openings: Luke Chueh – “Self-ish” @ CHG Circa

Streets: World Roundup (Sept 22 – Oct 12)

With this latest edition of our Streets: World Roundup article, we turn our eyes to Las Vegas for our featured mural from ROA. The Belgium-based artist withstood the desert heat for four days of hard work before completing this piece with the image of a horny toad, a local species that can squirt blood out of its eyes to deter predators. Painted for the Life Is Beautiful Festival, the wall can be found on Stewart and N. 6th Street. Other notable public art comes from […]

Previews: Tiffany Bozic – “Qualia” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

For Tiffany Bozic’s third exhibition opening October 16th at Joshua Liner Gallery (see 2010 & 2012), she has produced a stunning new series of paintings artistically exploring how various species (including our own) perceive the world around them. Entitled Qualia, the nine works of acrylic on maple panel showcases the San Francisco-based painter’s continued refinement and of her increasingly complex and detailed style. She further explains: “I call this show Qualia, which refers to individual subjective properties of our own conscious experiences. The way you experience the color blue […]

Previews: Andrew Mackenzie – ‘Veined With Shadow Branches’ @ Sarah Myerscough Gallery

Andrew Mackenzie’s connection to his environment is worn plainly on his sleeve. The artist is based in the Scottish Borders, where the nature-rich source imagery for his beautifully rendered oil paintings is found in abundance. His work explores the connectivity between the natural landscape and the built environment, and interestingly all of the oil-painted scenes are given a viewpoint from an edge; be it the edge of a lake, a forest, a road or a mountain. Mackenzie’s work depicts an inclination towards abstraction, and through the […]

In another collaboration (see McFetridge here)  that makes sense for both parties, Heath Ceramics in Los Angeles will be presenting a show from Brendan Monroe (interviewed) early next month. Blobography will feature organic sculptural forms from the Bay Area-based artist, which have always been an extension of his science-influenced imagery. Tickets to the opening reception on November 1st are available here. Discuss Brendan Monroe here.
