Faith 47 recently spent a few days painting in Durban, South Africa, as part of the cultural program of the 25th World Congress on Architecture, UIA2014 Durban. For this event, she will be painting six walls on four of the supporting columns of the main freeway overpass adjacent to the Early Morning Market in Warwick. Last we covered a solo show from Edwin Ushiro (interviewed), it was 2013 at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles where an amazing piece caught our eye. Last weekend, New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art premiered its retrospective of American artist Jeff Koons. Simply entitled A Retrospective, this exhibition bears significant importance to both parties. For the Whitney, it represents the last exhibition to be held at this original location before moving to their new home in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan in the spring of 2015. JR – “Women Are Heroes” Container Ship

Over the weekend, JR (interviewed) launched a pretty special project from Port of Le Havre, France – a 365 meter long container ship, the CMA CGM MAGELLAN, pasted with his iconic eye motif. Working on over 151 containers, the French artist used them as pixels to recreate the eyes of Elizabeth, a Kenyan woman living in the Kibera slums, in Nairobi from his Women Are Heroes series of works. Tomorrow night (July 5th) in San Francisco, Erik Jones will be opening his debut solo show at Hashimoto Contemporary. Entitled Motion, the new collection of paintings from the Brooklyn-based artist are figurative renderings seen through a veil of geometric expressionism. A wide variety of techniques are used in his mix-media portraits including his skill wtih watercolor, colored pencil, oil paint, and wax pastels leading to a rich and layered effect. Streets: Vhils (Portugal)

Only a couple days before the opening of his first museum show, Dissection, Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto aka Vhils finished this large outdoor piece in front of the Museu da Electricdade where the show will be held. As the last in a series of large works he created through the city, the final 360 degrees piece Panorama on the round water tank is one of his most elaborate ones yet. By transferring his scratched paper collage technique onto this large building, Vhils surely lifted up the quality of his work to another level. […]
