Jud Bergeron’s current exhibition Becoming carries its special little story on how it came to be. Funded by a recent kickstarter campaign to facilitate the casting of pieces such as Quack-Quack – the large scale bronze and mixed media sculpture of an atom bomb explosion of rubber duckies emanating from a pin-striped child’s pedal car, Bergeron used the crowd-funding route to deal with the huge upfront costs of mounting such an ambitious sculptural exhibition. San Francisco based artist, Francesco Igory Deiana, is opening a solo show at The Popular Workshop in San Francisco on the 27th of September. Last month, myplasticheart in New York hosted a solo show from Jeremiah Ketner (interviewed) entitled Ideal World. The new body of work featured the feel good imagery typically seen from the Chicago-based artist painted in bright colors. Ketner’s female and fairy-like characters frolic and play in a tranquil natural world full of flowers, vines, and gardens – certainly one artist’s interpretation of utopia. American artist Maya Hayuk recently opened her new European solo show Head Light at Alice Gallery in Brussels. Prolific street muralist Aryz is back in action with a new wall painted in Germany. The new piece was arranged by Positive-Propoganda, a non-profit art association based in Munich, which is dedicated to establishing contemporary and socio-political art in urban spaces. Earlier this month, the Buddy System Invitational (curated by Sven Davis) opened at the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. The group exhibition centered on the interesting concept having each of the 22 invited artists bring along a fellow artist to exhibit alongside them with each contributing one 16 x 20″ & one 8 x 8″ artwork. On September 27th, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) will be unveiling new sculptural installations in Hong Kong’s Time Square. Presented by LeBasse Projects, the large heads (see below) that look like the ones often seen in the LA-based artist’s work will be interacting with passer-bys in one of the busiest areas in Causeway Bay. Over the weekend, the Fabien Castanier Gallery presented new works from L’Atlas & Canto collectively entitled PARALLELS. Aptly named, the exhibition not only refers the nationality of the two French artists, but the similarities in their aesthetic that both involve abstraction, precise patterning, and geometric tendencies. The series of paintings and installations they produced do pair nicely when viewed together and certainly show that the two have come far since their time on the streets. Here’s a show that a few people are looking forward to. Unnatural Histories II is the follow up to last year’s group exhibition at Portland’s Antler Gallery. Opening on 26th September, the exhibition calls for each participating artist to create a natural history inspired portrait of a mythical creature. The subject can either be taken from existing mythologies/folklore or completely invented by the artist. Earlier this month Max Kauffman opened his solo exhibition Your Vulnerability Makes You Beautiful at Loakal Gallery in Oakland. Folk-tinged, and stylistically defined by his watercolour colour palette of brown and blue hues, Kauffman’s work within the exhibition presents subject matter of broken down houses and landscape elements reclaimed by nature.
