Banksy’s “Exit Through The Gift Shop” Oscar Nominated

It’s been months of buzz and speculation since the Exit Through The Gift Shop documentary made the 15 movie long-list for this year’s Oscars. Well, the Academy just announced the final five films for the category of Best Documentary and AM favorite Banksy got the nod for the groundbreaking “Street Art Disaster Film.” Even with nominations already announce from BAFTA, BFCA, Spirit Award & Cinema Eye Honors (Full award list here), we didn’t want to jinx this high profile nomination by saying anything. Now we can […]

Tomorrow, January 19th, marks the opening of the annual Los Angeles Art Show. Auction Results: “Urban Art” @ Bonhams 1/11/11

If today’s Urban Art auction at Bonhams can be seen as an indicator for the overall health of the Urban/Street Art market,  then things are looking absolutely strong, exciting, and prosperous.  Most lots found buyers and all the major pieces in the sale found new owners. The most notable result was Shepard Fairey’s Peace Goddess on maple from the Sea No Evil benefit auction in 2008, which surpassed everyone’s expectations and sold for over double the high estimate, at $43,000.  Among in-the-know Shepard Fairey collectors, […]

Openings: “Never Judge” @ StolenSpace Gallery

Never Judge, a group show where a diverse group of artists were invited to reinterpret their favorite book covers, opened recently at the StolenSpace Gallery in London. Classics like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, 1984, War of the Worlds, and Beauty and the Beast had their covers redone by artists like Art Under Pressure, Shepard Fairey, Eelus, and Will Barras. See these and more after the jump with photos courtesy of Street Art London and Unusual Image.

Openings: “Postermat” @ The Hole Gallery

AM recently attended The Hole Gallery’s latest show Postermat. The group exhibition was a little different than the typical group show because they went all retro with it. Imagine going back to your childhood and rummaging through mall shops for your favorite posters of sports, rockbands, singers or even comic books – almost everyone had a cheap but cool poster that was maybe mass produced, but meant the world to us. In the same spirit, the good folks at the Hole and Levi’s, got together […]

The Selby Visits Pharrell

Todd Selby certainly has been invited to visit many of the artists that we admire in the past (ie: Robert Longo & Mr.). This time, he visits Pharrell, who just performed at Art Basel Miami (covered) in his Miami home where his collection of KAWS paintings and sculptural pieces apparently play a prominent role in his interior decorating aside from a Keith Haring piece. The series of commission pieces based on Family Guy as well as rare edition figures certainly has AM jealous – oh, […]

It’s always nice to see multiple artistic movements, […]
