Openings: Faile x Vice Party @ Wythe Hotel

Several weeks ago, we shared some photos with you from a new installation by FAILE (featured) in the heart of Brooklyn – 104 N 7th. Commissioned by VICE and 42Below, the entire building facade at 104 N. 7th was covered with ceramic tiles that brought back memories of their ambitious Faile Temple installation (covered) in Portugal back in 2010. The project was part of a new VICE documentary, Art Talk with FAILE, which we also shared with you but there was also a party at the new […]

New York Times & Artists Pay Tribute to Maurice Sendak

With the great Maurice Sendak leaving us last week and heading off to Where the Wild Things Are, the interwebs have been buzzing with respect for the inspirational artist and illustrator. The New York Times, for their SundayReview section, asked artists Geoff McFetridge (work seen above), Gary Taxali, Art Spiegelman, Tomi Ungerer, Bob Staake, Marc Rosenthal and Jon Klassen to create artwork to pay tribute to Sendak as well as to share some of their thoughts.  Check out the rest of the art in a slideshow here as […]

Streets: Banksy (London)

A statement on child labour in the UK has appeared on the side of Poundland on Whymark Avenue in London with an underaged worker hard at work with a sewing machine creating some bunting (perhaps for the upcoming Queen’s Jubilee?). Although not confirmed as of yet by Banksy, the stenciling and style are all strongly reminiscent of Mr. B’s handiwork. Photo credit: the lonely villein.

MOCA Presents “Rebel” @ 941 N. Highland Avenue

This past weekend, MOCA presented Rebel, an exhibition conceived by James Franco and also including Douglas Gordon, Harmony Korine, Damon McCarthy, Paul McCarthy, Terry Richardson, Ed Ruscha, and Aaron Young. Showing at the JF Chen design space, the group effort is a deconstruction and reinterpretation of the legendary 1955 film Rebel Without A Cause which starred James Dean and Natalie Wood. Set within a space that mimics a Hollywood film set, the exhibition is broken up into different rooms and sections that studies various themes attached […]

Studio Visits: Yoshitomo Nara x Pace Prints @ Art HK

In anticipation for this year’s Art Hong Kong, we bring you a special studio visit to Pace Print’s Manhattan studios. For the fair opening on the 17th, Pace will be unveiling a special edition woodcut print created in collaboration with Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Unlike our recent trip to Pace’s Brooklyn studio with Shepard Fairey where experimental techniques were explored, this Manhattan location serves up a different set of traditional tools which were utilized by the blue chip Japanese artist. In applying a classic Ukiyo-e style technique for fine art […]

Openings: Dabs Myla – “Break Night Lovers” @ Known Gallery

Last weekend, deep in the heart of Los Angeles, the Known Gallery unveiled the latest work from the locally based duo, Dabs Myla. Break Night Lovers featured drawings, paintings, art objects, and a whimsical installation mimicking the inside of house complete with a fridge, painted stove, TV, table, chairs, and more. Executed in the Aussie couple’s signature cartoonish style, the showspace looked like the set of an animated feature where inanimate objects came to life whether painted on walls or in a three-dimensional form. The show […]

Streets: Yoskay Yamamoto (Los Angeles) Part II

After coming off an impressive exhibition at Lebasse Projects (covered) where he showed his versatility by focusing on sculptural works, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) decided to try something new in his artistic career and go large scale (see in progress pics here). Set up through Branded Arts, the mural is actually his first and it clearly showed that he can paint his signature style on not only the small canvas. Using a variety of stencils to create an interesting pattern of white stars blending onto the […]

Streets: World Roundup (May 7 – May 13)

For our summary of walls this week, we have for you as our featured wall – REYES in Detroit. The motor city has become one of the hotspots for street activity recently as the tanking economy has ironically led to more abandoned buildings facilitating the rise of public art. Also, the Detroit Beautification Project (first mentioned here) has been bringing in artists from all over to get up around town. We’ll have a summary on the project soon (also see Sever’s piece) but for now […]
