Update: Kate Mccgwire

It appears that the London-based Kate MccGwire has created some new work since her showing at All Visual Arts last April. For this series, the sculptor who utilizes feathers has enclosed her beautiful free-flowing forms in what look to be vintage cabinets. The pieces entitled Guile, Lure, Quell, Seer and Yearn feature carefully placed plumage from both MccGwire’s light and dark winged friends, transformed into emotion-evoking abstractions with her gifted hands. Take a look at more photos after the jump, but you can also currently see her […]

RETNA for Metropolitan Hotel

Notorious Los Angeles writer RETNA (featured), who we saw go all in for the Boneyard Project in Arizona, recently also released photos of some work he did in the garage of the Metropolitan Hotel. Repping his crew with his signature calligraphy, you can see the words As We Rise, Mad Society Kings, and The Seventh Letter in the background. Also included were walls that were shoutouts to other members as well as his alter-ego Brimstone. See more photos after the jump by Gypsy One.

Cezanne’s “The Card Players” Sells For Record $250 Mil.

We have finally found something that even David Choe may not be able to afford yet.  It has been reported by Vanity Fair that in 2011, the royal family of Qatar purchased Paul Cezanne’s painting The Card Players from the estate of George Embiricos for $250 million.  That is the highest known price that has ever been paid for a work of art.  They apparently outbid both Larry Gagosian and William Acquavella for the privilege of buying the piece.  The oil-rich collectors have been on […]

Art Focus: Peter Fuss

For our Art Focus this week, we turn our attention to Polish street artist Peter Fuss. In particular, we like his series of billboard takeovers and his take on social-political issues. No topic seems to be off-limit including the high-priced world of contemporary art, religion, turmoil in the Middle East, as well as more sardonic and witty items. Take a look at more examples of his work after the jump…

Streets: Anthony Lister (Los Angeles)

Last time we saw Anthony Lister in Los Angeles, he painted a mural (covered) based on the film The Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Now the Aussie artist is back in LA where he is preparing for his solo show at New Image Art (previewed). While here, he’s making the most of his time by also hitting up a Culver City location which is becoming a prominent mural spot for street artists as evidenced by walls from Herakut (covered), David Flores (covered), Cyrcle. (covered), Andrew […]

Tonight in Los Angeles, Matthew Bone is one of four artists (Bonnie Reid, Christine Wu, and Soey Milk) presenting work at La Luz de Jesus. It’s been a while since we last caught up with Bone (see 2009), and it looks like Paradise Lost features a collection of paintings combining his provocative imagery with his love for comics, Star Wars, and collectibles. More preview images after the jump…

Teaser: Matthew Palladino – “Sweet Relief” @ Eli Ridgway Gallery

Showing with the gallery that represented him during 2010’s Art Basel Miami Week and who hosted a solo from him in the same year, Matthew Palladino (interviewed) will be presenting a whole new body of work entitled Sweet Relief. As referenced to in the title, the ever-evolving artist will this time take on sculptural elements to extend his narrative into 3D with his largest collection of pieces to date. Utilizing molds that “themselves are made specifically for chocolate making (for making objects to be eaten), the […]
